View Full Version : Brakes, Caliper, Leak.. ?

Well, yesterday I start working on changing my brake pads, get them all changed up, now I'm to bleeding the brakes.

Problem is that no matter how tight I tighten the bolt where the brake lines go to the caliper it still leaks from there. right from where the line connects to the caliper itself (nowhere else). I have the washers in an all. (these are the calipers where the line bolts are the bleeder valve).

Anyone able to give tips on how to bleed these kinda brakes and to get rid of the leak.?

did you replace the copper washers? is the surface clean?

didn't replace the washers (lorco was out of em) and it seems clean.

I've had old washers leak. Replace them. And ALWAYS triple check that you're not stacking washers!!! New washer on old washer will definetely leak. Clean both sealing sides well, then replace the washers. Tighten it real good and there will be no more leak. As for bleeding, I don't know exactly what you have but I always try gravity bleeding first. And to be honest, it's worked for me every time. If there is somebody around I'll usually get them to help out for a sec to make sure it's all bled, but like I say gravity bleeding hasn't failed me yet, as bizarre as it sounds.

inspect the banjo fitting on the line too. Torque it to spec first, but if its still leaking, just tighten it as much as you can.....

Wait a sec, if all you did was change pads why would you have pulled the caliper? Should've just left it on, you don't need to go through the hassle of bleeding just to replace pads.

i wondered that at first too but chose not to think abt it haha

cause the piston would be way out from the old worn pads. and you would have to crack the bleeder...air probly got in....

allpontiacs
04-15-2006, 06:51 PM
No you don't, you just compress the piston back, so long as nobody as filled the master as the pads wore it will just go back to the full level and all is good. No bleeding involved. And even if some douche has been adding fluid, it'll just overflow in the master reservoir, have a catch can and rags handy.

allpontiacs

Wait, how do you figure air would get in??? Air can't get past the piston. And if it did, the brakes wouldn't work worth ass anymore.

Jessev
04-15-2006, 06:55 PM
lol ya, u just throw a c-clamp on the piston to get the new pad in, pump the brakes a few times and drive away

uhh i think its pretty damn hard to press the piston back in of you dont crack the bleeder...

Uhhh no it isn't, like Jesse said you just throw a C-clamp on it and go. Unless your arms are the size of toothpicks you won't have a problem. I've done more brake jobs than I care to remember, I've never ever cracked the bleeder or removed a line just to replace pads.

C-CLAMP!!!!!
fuck we let the stoner kids in mechanics handle brake jobs then check em after its hardly more difficult than oil change

Haha that's true, actually replacing pads is almost easier than an oil change...

how many brake jobs have you done where you just replace the pads? thats not very good practice

Jessev

how often do you get air in your brake lines? thats a shitty installation in the first place.

Hahahaha excellent response my good man. The fact is, if all you need is pads then why would you fuck around with bleeding? Obviously you have to machine or replace the rotor too, but that doesn't involve removing any lines...what is bad practice about this? If the caliper fails, you replace them both, and you're good to go...only reason you would ever need to bleed the lines.

if youre going by the book you replace the caliper too....

lmao i hope you're joking
only thing that id ever consider replacing ever brake pad job would be pads and maybe the wheel bearings. although ive never even done that, just repack em.

WHAT?!?? You don't need to replace the caliper every time you replace pads!!! That's a monumental waste of money, calipers will last 5-10 years! Pads are a wear item meant to be replaced on a regualr basis, calipers aren't. A typical jobber brake job will not include calipers, it includes pads and rotors.

allpontiacs
04-15-2006, 07:09 PM
Yeah repacking is fine, so long as they aren't chipped or scored. Of course, that's only for hub in rotor, I LOVE slip-on rotors. Easiest brake jobs in the world.

well for $14 i think its worth it. agreed about the 5 year thing...but who gets their brakes done every 2 years?

I've never gotten calipers that cheap, at least not for anything I drive. In the 20's, but never cheaper...and yeah, I'd say most people get brake jobs done every two years or less, I can never make my pads last much more than a year.

One note on rebuilt calipers, sometimes they aren't rebuilt very well...I've seen rebuilt calipers with rusty bores, especially from Fenco...I usually get rebuilts since I don't have ready access to an air compressor, but it's not very hard to rebuild them yourself and it's cheap too.

383TA
04-15-2006, 07:19 PM
yeah i reblilt some 4 piston calipers...not bad. just remember to put a block of wood between the piston... if you dont have air just leave the brake line on and remove the rotor, press the pedal.

if it aint broke dont fix it, some cars year calipers are $14, try some imports, there far from that, 1 caliper for my mazda is $60, and if u think that everytime i do the pads that im gunna *buy a new set of calipers ur of ur fucking rocker.

definetly do a good inspection of the brake components each time u do pads and if something shows signs of wear or failure then replace it of course.

engine was rebuilt like 70-80 thousand km ago, just a refresh thou.

Id hate to even guess what the front calipers are worth on my 91 Z28 1LE :D
