If all goes well ill be getting a new (used) rearend (complete)... its the exact same as mine, 8.5" 10bolt just built up!, and it would be a straight bolt out, bolt in.
How hard is it to do? remember this is just a 2nd gen so no fansy control arms and crap. what needs to be done?
and is there anyone here that might have room and tools/time that could help me out? if i end up doing this?
thx

It's actually a reasonably difficult thing to do to swap from a leaf to coil setup. Ive done it before and if you have someone who is offering to help then you're all good 8)

Oh right stupid me you are keeping the leafs, it should be an easy swap then ...haha I just assume everyone uses coils :P

assuming all goes smoothly which it never does lol id say the break line are the most bitchiest. we could have it out in 2 hours of lazy and about another 2 hours to get it back in, just need simple tools and a roller floor jack (most important) the only problem on mine is i needed to put new brake lines into the distribution block to the brakes. and cut the old ones maybe.
oh ya and you'll need some pipe wrenches that is all folks ;D

If it takes you 2 hours to take out the rear you've got bigger problems and it will probably take you 2 days to put the other one in.
I plan to do the same thing myself in the next month (I have to clean / paint / replace brake line on the new/used rear).
Having removed a rear by myself I would say that with a couple people it shouldn't take more that a couple hours to do the whole thing.
Then again, as everyone knows, it only takes one nasty bolt / nut to screw up that schedule.
Let me know when / where and if I'm free (e-mails best) I'll come by and offer some help.

i have done mine several times, i put those times in to account for problems from stuff that hasnt been removed forever, you have to take your time with the brakes or you will be in a world of hurt, mess up one fitting and your doing the whole thing. and the distrubution block is tricky to get it without messing it up. also you have to align the rear, do the e brake mounts and split the line. take the ds out and in, rpolly put in new u bolts, take the shock mounts off. i know exactly what it takes and all angles of the problems that can occur.
what you cant read? "we could have it out in 2 hours of lazy and about another 2 hours to get it back in" i would say its a 4 hour job. and note how i said LAZY to say it will only take 1 hour to re and re everything is a far fetch, especially on a car that is old, fight with one stubborn bolt for 20 min and theres 1/3 your time. if you want to power wrench and run around at max speed like a chicken with its head cut off, power swap NASCAR style then be my guest. ::)
p.s. im in a bad mood >:(

angle grinder is quick and safe but a cutting torch is way more fun ;D, plus u can make a few bombs if you get borded ;)

Perfect that this topic came up, I have been toying with the idea of swapping in a 2nd gen rear (modified for 3rd gen) into my car as it is the cheapest way to get a good rear into my car (2200 US for Moser 12 bolt ...... NOPE :o )
anyways can one of you guys (if you have the time and don't mid) measure flange to flange on the 2nd gen rear, in inches im comparing sizes to see if it is a workable swap.
Thanks

not out of my car, no passes on it. 3.42's POSI its a stock 8.5 10 bolt diff, out of a 80 Z28. low miles, good shape. A1 rearend. i think i was asking 260 for it :)

If you could measure it up that would be great, ill get Mike or get the info I need from my rear, and if the lengths are good then I think I would grab it.

Ok I found out 3rd gens are 58-5/8" from axle flange to axle flange.
so was that 61" round up or down, I am hoping it was round up, causer that would bring things closer, if it is 1" on either side I can live with that ..... then it's just a matter of price :)

i took out the brake one, not so imprtant lol :P anyhow i did some research plus my est. measure its supposed to be exactly 61" wide. as far as price goes, $260.00 is what im looking for :)

Ok,
that's not bad from what I can tell should only be 1.19" wider on each side, which isn't horribly bad ...... I did find some info on the net as well, just wondering if it matches up with what you found.
58-5/8" from axle flange to axle flange. - 3rd gen off TGO.org
55.25" Axle tube flange to axle tube flange: 2nd gen off NastyZ28.com

ok more thinking out loud,
if the 2nd gen rear is 61" and 3rdgen is 58.625" plus I add a 1/8" spacer for the rear wheels, so it is really 58.750.
means only 1.0625" per side .... very do able.
So now a list of what I need to have modified on the 2ndgen rear to mount into a 3rdgen.
spring perches (sp?)
LCA brackets
Panhard mount
Torque arm mount
anything else I missed?
anyone good with a welder or know someone good with a welder?
Jason - willing to go any cheaper or you firm on the price?
Mike (IROCN) got that 3rdgen drum rear I can canabilize?
Anyone got pictures of a second gen rear out of a car and a 3rdgen rear out of a car as well ... ill check the net but if you have em can you email to me or post.
thx all in advance

Jason,
If you have time can you measure up a 3rdgen rear, as however you measured the 2ndgen it would be best I think if you measured a 3rdgen as well in the same manner you did the 2nd as I am finding a bunch of conflicting reports of lengths all over the net.
so if the 2nd is 61" long if you have time to measure up a 3rd that would be great.
