UMMMM simple bigger is better! ;D
small blocks are nice and light and spin good rpms. but a highly tuned BBC is a ass ripper, torque that makes ur face melt, and ur body quiver. and sounds wicked!

400 main sbc isnt my cup of tea. simeased block, lots of problems to make it reliable and its externally ballanced, not as good as internal. but as long as your not going to crazy should be fine ;D

haha you noob Jason you don't know much about 400's obviously. lol

i know enought that they arent as good of a block as a 350. if you had an aftermarket block then it wouldnt apply. but stock 400 blocks arent desireable to the majority of proffesional engine builders and racers out there, unless its aftermarket

ive got one thing to say:
dont mess with prostreet JJ

66chevyIISS

from someone with 400 experience:

"yesterday I went 9.89 @ 135 mph with my 40 over 400 (2bolt) I made 595 hp at the wheels (apx. 750 flywheel) I drive this on the street ever week and never had a problem (been running this block for 9 years, with this build up for 3 years).
Have had 10 plus nitrous runs in the 9's and over 100 in the 11.3-11.6 range..... "

another person with real 400 experience:

We have been having great success with 2 bolt 400s. Never on the spray or anything just all motor. But we are getting some VERY respectable times. I just went a new of:

1.48 60'
6.09 1/8
11.02@121MPH in full weight cars!

A standard bored 2 bolt 400 block is worth gold to engine builders. My buddy that sold me the front clip is running 10.65's on all motor with his 400 and next year he will be in the low 9's with the same motor.

id love to destroke a 400 block with a 350 crank it makes 377 cubes and once ballanced can spin 10,000rpm, to go that extreme is spend the money to splay the mains and make it a 4 bolt main, only downfault ive heard on the 400's is that there cyllindder walls are quite thin, keep em cool and no worries!

Jinks
10-30-2003, 08:33 PM
uhhh OR you could go with a 350 block and a 400 crank which is way more common :)

the physical head size and cc of the chambers and the ports, along with the valve size, and physical block size outside an in 8)

this is a SBC

You can tell which block the heads belong to just by looking at the heads? the BBC you showed me looks like the POS early 80's GM 2.5L 4 cylinder head that I worked on. Is that the valve placement that helps you to identify the head? Which means any small block's head has the valve placement in a line like the 1st pic you showed me? Sorry for all these newbie question, I'm here to learn. Thanx :)

ya pretty much, Big block also is wider and the valve cover mounting isnt as rectangular. and a small blocks valve cover is held down with a 4 bolt pattern a Big Block head is a 5 bolt pattern. yes SBC is linear valves but thats only on a std 23 degree head, when you get into custom race heads that are less degree the valves can become staggered too ;D

p.s. that 2.5L 4cyl has nothing to do with a big block lol crap vs cool 8)

if you want to know the difference between BBC and SBC it's really simple.. Just look at the width in the manifold and head area. BB is way wider.
