this is a really stupid question that i should know the answer to.. If i used a buffer, like one of those blue ones from canadian tire, on my car would it make it shine?? And give it that glossy look?

Buffer pads act as a carrier for the compound. The actual pad should not damage the paint. The compound is a grit (2000 to 8000 grit) that rubs the old paint or gloss off to expose the fresh stuff. Just about it.

Well....kinda. Solid color cars in the 80's are usually primer and then the base color. You can see this really good when the base color starts to chip or where down. These solid colors rarely have a clear coat on them, so they start to "oxidize" or turn pale. When you buff cars with solid color, no base, you actually remove the oxidization to expose the nice paint, polishing as you go.

Starting in the mid 80's, they came out with a clear coat, which covers the solid color so it doesn't oxidize. This makes the paint appear wet all the time. When you buff these cars, you are only polishing the clear coat, because the clear coat itself doesn't oxidize. Teeny weeny scratches come from road grim, washing and the like. Too small to really see, but it still makes it not shine as much.

For example, my car has (had) 3 coats base and 7 coats clear. Nearly a gallon of clear. Outcome - way shiny!

Well when i bought my car, the owner told me he had it painted at... uhg.. maaco ::) , its kind of a metallic blue. like it has those little chips in it. But its losing its shine and there are some swirlys in it. So i was thinking about buffing it to bring its shine back. This should be ok.. right
