no that's to big
I found out I can take the 396 and turn it into either or..........and for less then the 572......even tough I can get the 572 really cheap cause of who I know....i want to keep the stock block.....just done up a lot
allpontiacs
12-31-2006, 01:11 PM
I would leave the engine completely alone, if I were you. It, and the car, is worth more that way. Just dump a badass big block in it, and keep the 396 as it is. If you ever sell, you can put the 396 back in and bill it as original #'s matching.

ya i've thought about it, one of my other buddies has a 72 with the 572 dropped in it.....awesome engine, but he can't go cruisin anywhere with it, so if I were to drop another engine i'd probably just drop in a 502

I can't believe the gas milage of these old school engines...the 396 it like 8 mpg if i'm lucky
and my buddies 572 is about 3 mpg
i know first thing i'm gonna try is swappin out the rear end from the stock 4:11 gears to some 3:73....see if I can get a bit better top end out of it too

The corvette answer is to add a LS2 and get up to 37 miles per gallon, realistically I get somewhere in the high 20's, these motors need less fuel than a water-drinking camel going thru the desert.

Avgas is the shizzle fo rizzle. I don't understand why more guys don't run it, it's a lot cheaper than race gas.

Not true. Lastest article I read on Rockett Brand says their 118 octane is "fast-burning" and that fuels can be engineered for high-octane and a fast-burn.

most people dont run it cuz its not meant for cars. sure it would be decent in a motor like mine n/a for power. but its the shits for boost/nitrous as its specific gravity, additives and general formula arent meant for it, its meant to be run at high altitude in a plane.

you do realize that all realitivity, sure it might be a quicker fuel for a 118 but it aint no fast burning fuel. 87 is fast burning fuel that cant take heat/ compression. remember the purpose is to make it less combustable but hold more stored energy, thats why lead is involved, it dampens the fuels tendency to combust under heat/ pressure. thats also why theres so many different fuels engineered for certian applications and environments they need to live under.

I suppose...I'd still run it with a blower, though. If it's still easy to get avgas when the 455 goes together, I'm not going to bother with custom pistons. My heads on that motor with regular pistons will makes something like 13:1, perfect for avgas!
79 Z28
01-11-2007, 09:37 AM
13:1 is pushing it for 100 octane
allpontiacs
01-11-2007, 09:48 AM
I know, I'm actually going to just throw in some custom dished pistons to get down to the high 9's. What's the point having a nice, full interior car if you can't fill up at the pump? I'm hoping somebody reads that and figures they can do it though, and then we can tell them why their motor blew up! Although I would honestly use it with a blower. Not nitrous, though.
I'm thinking on that 118, sure it might be a fast burning fuel, but the whole point of high octane fuel is that it doesn't fire up without spark...so it probably still isn't that easy to ignite in the first place.
