Hi all!
This might seem a bit like out the blue., but here it is.
My name's Ellis, I live in Burnaby, and I bought a 1992 RS, 25th Anniversary, v8, Camaro. I think the color is called purple haze - very good condition paint for a 92 Camaro, it is t-tops, and oh gosh, it has brand new leather interior - courtesy or ICBC.
This is my first own car, me and my friend share it. We used to drive a 2002 Cavalier, but lets not talk about that. (We're not car wreckers, but shit happens)
When I bought the car, I was drifting in the clouds of finally owning a Camaro! I put out 5500$ for it, which I still think is considerably good price - comparing to what I have seen on BuySell.com
But anyways, so me being in the clouds I have ignored the seller (Private, aparently mechanic - restorer) saying that the car was sitting in the garage for 2 years. Me and my friend looked at the body - found some minor scrateches - nothing big, opened the hood, it looked a bit dirty, but seemed to function - the car wa running. Also the seller noted that the car was not Air Cared, well we though it's alright, we can do that, plus the mechanic said that he will pass the car for free if it fails.
Well, guess what? The car did not pass the aircare, and I still cannot reach that mechanic, he doesnt answer his house phone, nor he returns my messages. But thats not the big problem. The car is high on CO and HC. Today I have put out ~300$ for a good catalityc converter, it got welded on, since the original costs 700$+ (at the GM dealership) Well it cut the HC emmissions in half to 0.75 out of 0.5 passing, before the cat it was 1.42. The CO emmisions rose to 25 from 24, out of allowable ~9. The NOx halfed at 0.14, comparing to previous ~0.2 (both passing values). So today I've spent searching around for mechanics, drove around visited couple of places, they told me what I already found out from the AirCare.com, that the most likely reason is my Mixture qualities - TOO RICH they all said, and most likely it is the O2 sensor, well, they say, I guess it is true, gotta change that.
But here comes the mystery of my "novell", all of the mechanics were bug eyed at me (they have no idea what it is) when they saw a some sort of a "system" mounted in place where my Snorkel was supposed to go, right next to the Washer Fluid tank, in the right bottom corner of the engine bay (if u look from the top)
"The System" consists of a round black barrel about 20 cm diameter and about 30 cm height, with rubber hose going on top of it, and some going out of it. The "barrel" has a descriptive note on the side "Cleans the engine, reduces emmissions, and improves horse power" It also has couple of wires point to it so I guess "That sucker's electrical" (Who watched Back To The Future will understand - I hope its not nuclear). THe hoses from this barrel goes into two other...ummm !!!GLASS JARS!!! which have extensive wrting on them, but due to aging proccess, the paper with the writing - which was sticky taped to the lars, is completely unreadable. The only thing I was able to read was "Change...every...3000 kilometers" - I wouldnt mind doing so, as long as I knew what it was...Also there is an AmpereMeter connected to that "System" it only works when I connect one of the wires hanging off it to the battery terminal (obviously there have to be load on it, so it works only when the engine is running). One of the hoses has a transparent chamber with a fluid filter inside, on one of the hoses.
Ok, so heres the question.....WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT THING?!?!?! WHAT DOES IT DO?!?!?! AND WHY DO I NEED IT??!?!
I am 100% sure it is not stock, 100% sure it is not working, cause there are no fluids inside...the glass...jars....
Please tell me what do you think it is, if you want pictures, I will do some when it is light. Also tell me how much would it cost to replace an 02 sensor
