View Full Version : Speed Limiter?

I'm ripping down the freeway on my way to work, doin about 200km/h, so i decide to punch it to see how fast she'll go, I got to 4000 rpm in 5th and the motor shut down for a second, what is up with that, I'm guessing I was doing 260km/h (I do 130km/h at 2000 rpm in 5th)
Do third gens have a speed limiter or is my car just fucked?
They are limited. What is your motor?

i dont think it can do 260kph lol and if it did, better have 4 miles of straight to get her up there with a 305 ;D

I can rip 200kph no problem in 4th, and 5th still has plenty of pull
I don't know for sure how fast i was going my speedo only goes to 185, I just do the math to guess
I did it between 160th and 176th on the freeway
with a more or less stock 305, i very highly doubt you cracked 240kph, which is still fucking fast

You'd be surprised, I'm sticking with 260 math doesn't lie
2000 rpm in 5th=130kph
4000 rpm in 5th=a
2000x2=4000
130x2=260
a=260
yes it did take about 4 miles straight to get it up there
yes, you doubled your rpms, but that definately doesnt mean you double your speed. At over 200kph there is a shitload of wind resistance as well.
just searched thirdgen.org archives, and general concencus seems to be that all RS's are speed limited between 110-120 mph. :-\

I guess if you account for clutch slippage say 10% that would still give me 240 or so
I've defenently gone faster than 110-120 mph in my Iroc, my speedo goes to 115 mph, and I can more than bury the needle in forth in 4th
I don't ever remember hitting a speed govener in the RS I used to have,
I guess this is 1 reason carbs are better, I've never had a problem pulling 5 grand in top gear in either of my carbed camaros
EDIT- just went to Fbody.com

I pulled 235 km/h in my bone stock G92 305 TPI. That was tested with a GPS, since STOCK SPEEDOS ARE ALWAYS OFF.

Here's the proper formula:
RPM x tire diameter
----------------------------------------------- = MPH
336.13 x transmission gear ratio x read end ration

So are stock tachs!
Mine says 5000 when my engines spinning 4000 (this may be a rare case, but it's not that old, only a '91).

Plate id block on drivers side at back of the engine.

is it easily visible?? by the back of the engine you mean the part closest to the firewall.. right.. or is that pretty obvious.

If that's a problem, you can use the engine vin. It's usually on the passenger side head on SBC's.(in front of the valve cover)

i think your all on crack,
the ls1 top speed is like 270kph, so i dont see how a 305 is gonna hit near that cause wind resistence is exponential, so the power needed to go from 200 to 260 is a lot more than from 100 to 160, or 160 to 200
im even scared im my ws6 once i hit the 200+, the cross winds start to get scary...you guys must have jet-propelled tanks for Irocs or somthing :o

I don't think he was going 250, he was just estimating after the speedo ran out. As the speed gets higher, acceleration slows down (due to the exponential wind resistance), so it would take a long time (and a lot of straight road) to hit 250km/h with a 305. 250km/h=150mph, and it takes about 500HP for a 3rd gen to hit 200mph, so I'm gonna guess that a stock 305 couldn't hit it (without a strong tailwind!)

top speed in your car is in 5th is it not?
have the speed limiter removed and you'll go faster than 270
speed limiter of new cars is based on the speed rating of the tires it came with stock
as far as handling the car at that speed learn to drive ;D ;) or let me take you for a rip in your car ;D
and there is no such thing as too fast

Just because you have the gears to go 270km/h doesn't mean the engine makes enough power to push enough air out of the way to go that fast. With a weak engine, it's possible that fourth gear could go faster than fifth due to gear reduction/higher torque.
89vert
04-23-2004, 09:40 PM
fourth gens have lots of pull in 6th and the speed limiter kicks in before you rev out 5th at least that what in does in the 95 I rip around in

I dunno what gear top speed is in...and if top speed is past 270 theres no way im ever gonna reach it....you'd need a fucking runway to get that high and back down again.
And it's not the car i don't trust at 200+ speeds, its the piece of shit roads everywhere. I don't even trust the highways. Hit a bump the wrong way at that speed and your fucked. I dunno, I like life to much to die driving 200+ for no reason.

thats why you do it when racing like me, somewhere close to 140 and blow it up. heh and on a side note even for my close to 400hp car with gearing to go that fast it takes time, cuz it slows down up top :)

best place to do top speed test is on the freeway either from 160th to 176th or passed 200th it does take some time to get to top speed and it burns a shit load of gas but I like the tunnel vision 8), the best time to do it is between 4 and 6 a.m.,

Some may recognize my name, but for those that I don't, I am a moderator of the DIY Prom Board on www.thirdgen.org
All 3rd Gens with an ECM have a speed limiter (and rev limiter) in their code. Certain vehicles that came stock from the factory with Z-rated tires (L98s & LB9s) SD cars and all L98s and LB9s MAF cars had the speed limiter set to 255 mph (hex FF). As well as the rpm limiter set around 10,000 rpm.
All the rest have a speed limiter set anywhere from 110 - 125 mph (depending on model & options). Not sure about the rev limiter on other cars - never really looked.
Lastly, if you have an automatic, you may find that your tranny will not upshift from 3rd to 4th at WOT. There is a modification to fix this as well as some other problems with the stock 700R4/4L60.

its at 153mph, like 260 or something
all new cars have to have a speed limiter based on the tires

Ah quite possibly I was told that there was no speed limiter in the code with Z rated tires, only with the V 235/55R16 tires and it was 130km/h.
My TA originally came with RPO QFZ, 245/50ZR16 RS-A tires

85-93 you have to burn a new prom and remove it in the hex code or whatever you call it
OBD I and II you have to get some sort of power programmer or laptop type program to edit it, afaik

Exactly. On 94-95 LT-1s you need to reflash the PCM. If anyone is driving through Kamloops and has a Thirdgen, I have all the equipment to remove the speed limiter on the majority of the V8 cars and V6 cars.
Unfortunately, I don't have the proper cable to reflash 94-95 LT-1s.
