87 Z rear end

just wondering if it would be 26 or 28 spline axels in a 87 z-28. just trying to determine if i can put the gears in my 81 malibu.

first off is you malibu a 3.08 and down carrier? and are the gears you're trying to put it in a 3.23 and up?

cause then they won't fit, need the right carrier

2nd its the posi unit or what ever if its 1 tire fire that the axles go in so unles you are using that out the camaro it wouldn't matter

I can't say for sure cause I really have no idea, but I think the 7 1/2 rears in early 3rd gens got 26 and later 7 5/8 got 28 spline, but I can't say for sure,

and 87 would be right around the cross over year from 7 1/2 ring gear to 7 5/8

gears are gears for a 7.5 or 5/8 doesnt matter, 2 series or 3 series is all you need to watch for, axle spline doesnt matter, unless you are trying to swap the whole unit also.

so i think the camaro has 3.42. and i know my malibu has 2.41 is there anything i can do to fit the camaro gears in the malibu rearend or do i need a whole new rearend, or can i buy gears that fit in a 2 series carrier? basically is my whole rearend garbage cause its a 2 series or can i do something?

you can either swap to a 3 series carrier and use the 3.42's out of it. or you need to buy a ratio in 2 series to fit your existing carrier.

carrier is the unit that the ring gear bolts to and the axles spline into

so what im going to do then is pull the gears and carrier out of the camaro and bolt them into my housing with the malibu axles and a mini spool. sound like it should all work?
