I'm going through the same hell you 3rd gen's are... stuck with a 7.5 rear end. What can you do to strenghten these rearends? Or are there any direct bolt ins that would work? I've heard that GN had an 8.5" rear end but I've never seen a GN being wrecked.

the popular upgrade is a 8.5" out of a 2nd gen camaro or firebird. pirches and such would need to be welded on but all in all its the best swap. of course GN rears already have this gone but because they are GN they are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

i had an 8.5 rear end in my 85 monte carlo ss the came stock in early monte carlo ss i had a second one that i bought for 800$ but you can buy a ford 9" thats bolt in for like 1200$
can I suggest going to malibu racing .com and reading there tech on rear ends. A 58-59 ford 9" will be the exact same with as the a/g bodies 78-87. then it is just get some shock mounts, spring perches and control arm mounts welded on. It is a way cheaper way to go and you can use your current rear to build a jig if you got a welder, it dosnt have to be pretty. This is my plan for next season. Just put a add in the buy and sell, and definately see all the other options on maliburacing.com. It tells you what is close so you dont need to cut. The 60's 70's chevelles had the spring perches welded already in the right places on the 12 bolts I believe. good luck all chevy would be nice. ;D

hey guys....maybe one of you have 1 of those diff. covers with the caps or watever. The cover is made by TA performance. Hopefully 1 of you knows wat i'm talking about. I'm building yet again another 7.5 with another Auburn. Do these caps make it any stronger, or is it just the regular BS. I can't aford an 8.5 or the bullsh*t with the 9" or any other swap. This 1 had better last me more than a year and a half...............opinions??

those caps are worth their wieght in gold, they stengthen the entire chassis center section for less housing flex, cuz they are thick. thewy have 2 studs that pre load onto the main caps preventing cap stretch and distributes the load over a way greater area preventing deflection.well worth the money :)

thx man...............i'm gunna look into it. I dunno if i can scrape up the xtra change for it, but i'll sure as hell try. 'Berts automotive' is the best i've been to - $1500 cash deal for a clutch and the re-build of the 7.5. I hope they're not too expensive, but is sure as hell know they're not a c-note. Thx again 79 Z28 ~ i can always add it later ;)
