ya the players editions ones are the ones that were raced prior to being sold. They were 1LEs too but they had a motor with a higher output than the 350s, there were only 97 made in 91!!! ME WANTY

The engines in the Players Challenge Series cars (R7U - or A4U before 89) were no more powerfull than any other 305 of the same production year. The engines in Players cars were hand assembled and dyno tested to make sure they were all as close in power as possible so the series would be competitive. There were no special parts or modifications to the engines. A different PROM (chip) added a rev-limiter and eliminated the VATS (antitheft) system on 89 and later cars.

And just to add to that, the bolts on the engines were painted as well so that you could not remove any of them without it being detected.

The Players Series ran from 1986-1992. There was only an Eastern divison in 1986, and it expanded with a western division in 1987. There were approx. 90 Camaros and firebirds built each year with an average of 20 Trans Am to 70 Camaros built. There were no 1990 cars built as they were all 1991 model cars, hence why the 1991 production numbers are higher than other years. There were very few 1992 cars built as you could run a 1991 car in 1992 with only an engine change. In prior years you had to run the current car, but could use last years car as a backup.
The 1LE option was created as a directly result of the Players series (and also due to the US SCCA racing). 1LE was essentially heavy duty front brakes. In 1988, all Players cars came off the assembly line from the heavy duty front brakes ... the first equipped! Some early cars were delivered with the brakes separate. In 1989-1992, all Players cars were option code R7U, which is basically a marketing package. This was put together in late 1988 by GM after getting input from all the drivers. A group of options was then put together and the only choice a driver had was color. Some of these options included power windows, locks, mirrors, stereo ... and of course 1LE! In prior years, the drivers could select different option groups (of course, no A/C or T-tops). The option code was A4U. There was yet a different code in 1986, but all 1986 cars had the L69 engine which was the only carb'd year.
Many of the cars met horrible fates and were destroyed. Many are still actively racing, although do not resemble what they were. And still many are out on the streets. Very few are still in original shape.
If you would like more detailed information, please drop me a note.
Mark.

is it true they painted the bolts? ???
Well I believe when the engines were assembled they painted the bolts so that you couldn't change the camshaft or whatever for more power and an advantage over the field.....it's called showroom stock for a reason.

I used to own a 91 Players 1Le R7U car, I sold it a year and a half a go to a guy in Burnaby, he has two now. I have some pics of it still but I can't post them, if anyone wants to post them for me that would be great and everyone can see them.
My "old" car was purchased from Flag Chev/Olds and was sponsored by Motomaster for the series. It was driven by a guy named Frank Allers. It was all stock with all the regular 1LE/R7U, the only mod was a roll cage was installed by the previous owner to me.
Karl Hunter knows which car it is, the buyer took it to him to check it out and verify it. He may have more details now and if the same guy still has it. I wish i knew about this site earlier as i had a tough time trying to sell it because nobody really new what it was and figured I was bullshiting. anyways let me know if someone wants to post some pics so you guys can all see them

Yes you met me at a party in Richmond, I saw your car in the members rides forum, and was like hey that's the dude from richmond. The cages were installed at the time of races but were taken out when they were resold I believe, can't remember now, out of the car loop for a while now, into toyota 4x4's now

It has a dope sound system in it too, I got A&B sound to do a custom job on it. 2 Alpine S-series 12's in the trunk with custom box with matching carpet, Sony X-plode 780 watt amp. JL 6x9's and 2 alpine 4x6's in the dash with the top of the line Alpine deck in 2000 which was like $800 just for the deck, man have those prices ever come down. I wonder if he took the system out? Look at the last six digits of your vin#...If I remeber the last 3 tell you what number your car was as it rolled off the assembly line.....for instance I remember the last six of mine 177292, so I believe mine was the 292'nd ILE of the line, Players cars I think they never numbered??????

Finding Players (R7U) cars is not easy - for any year. Finding the decal package is almost impossible these days. I only know of a couple of cars that have any of the decals remaining on them. As far as finding specifically a 1991 - well of course that makes things even more difficult, cause you are limited to only about 100 or less cars that were produced IN TOTAL - Camaros and TransAms. Half are gone - wrecked - crashed - or whatever, so there "may" be 50 left in the world. Who knows what kind of condition they are currently in. I know of several 91 Players cars personally... Most were raced HARD - and have the body filler to tell the tales. The cars were crashed regularly in the series, and they were fixed as quickly and as cheaply as possible to get them back on the track for the next race. If you find a car with winning history - it also has been bashed. Gauranteed. Finding a car that is straight means it may have run mid-pack at best - but you get the better car. You have to decide how picky you are going to be about the history - and the car, cause you can't have both. My car has no winning history, but it does have all the original body panels. Same goes for the 89 TA for sale.
What do you intend to do with a Players car anyway? What makes you want one so bad? Just curious.

I really just want to have one as a collector. Basically I really dont see myself driving it on a regular basis. Its a fascination with them and as you say, there were only97 built in 91. A4U ;)
In 87-88 I heard they used all kinds of brake setups(all the way from Corvette to Caprice 9C1 brakes), but Ive never seen a real A4U so all I can do is listen to what everyone else tells me lol
but Mike you're prolly right, it's prolly got dual piston PBR's

It has 12" fronts with the dual piston PBR, the rears are aluminun PBR claipers with 11.65" (?) approx.
the origianl engine is gone, it got "windowed" at the track before me, it has a 350 now +.060 over approx 300 HP. fresh T-5, Hawk Blue front pads and Hawk HP PLus rears. AF Coil springs with adjustable spring perches, KONI sport shocks and struts, griffith aluminum radiator. Full cage, new Kirkey seat, Leaf harness, It does 1:37 's at Mosport.....now I have to drive it that fast!!!! LOL!!!
I wil be racing it in SOLO 1 and hopefully some GT events.
let meknow if anyone wnat specific pictures of anything.

son of a bitch you got a killer deal on it
If I were u ID try to go back and figure out who used to own it
then see if u can get paperwork for it and some pics of it from race time etc.. they are worth more when they have documentation

depends on car
yours might have never seen the track/had the cage installed
check the floor for holes, check the carpet for cuts, check the body kit for cutouts for the side exhaust

Wow that is a nice find. Another Player's car discovered.
I know the sister car to IrocNparts (next sequential VIN) was sold a year or so ago to a person up in Fort Mac ... or somewhere north of Edmonton. It was a red car. Not sure if the owner knew it was an R7U or not ... just a 1LE. If by some remote chance that is you ... then I know something about that car (IE. who raced it).
Looking at your VIN, I don't think yours is that car.
Yours is a 1990 model year car (I can tell by the sequence number). So it was probably raced in the 1990 year, and could have been raced in the 1991 and 1992 seasons. IF so, your engine will have been replaced with a newer crate motor.
Most of the 1991 cars will have had a new series engine installed. You need to check the VIN stamp on the block to be sure. A crate motor will only have the build date and engine code: As an example:
The coding was: V0124CLW.
V - Flint Engine
01- Build month
24 - Build Day
CLW - Engine code - 1991 LB9
If your lucky enough to have the VIN stamped, then you could say it is a number matching car ... but a series replacement motor (no VIN) is the next best thing.
If you want to document your car, the first step is to order a GM vintage package. ABout $45 bucks. It will tell you when it was built, what dealership, option code breakdown and most like the number of R7U's built (important for your appraisal ... if you care about that).
Once you find the dealership out, then you are only a few steps away at finding out who might have raced it.
Sounds like the previsous owner might know it too.
... if your car was raced in 1991, then it might still have the race prom in it. The last race cars had them. You can tell they are race proms if the prom has the same yellow/white paint over the window of the PROM. Another tell tale sign is your shift lights comes on a 5200.
If you want more details on R7U ... drop me a note. I have lots of info.
Mark.

Was this the car you were speaking of Mark? Tom's red car...was this thing an R7U as well or just a 1LE?
Apparently some young kid from Ft. Mac bought it. Sadly he didn't care what the car was, he just wanted something to drive the hell out of...
Wonder if this car is still around? It was mint.

Ya that was it. It was either one before or after Mike's car in the sequence number in the VIN. If you had to own a pair of R7U's ... having them in order was just cool.

Yes that was it. The picture is from Three Hills. The black on to the right is a 1991 5.7L 1LE car.
I think I have a few snaps from three hills and the World of Wheels of this car. I completely forgot.
Check your email Mike.

... seems I need to sort that pile now too ... might be some lost players stuff that I did not know I was filming!
Mark.
PS. Notice the pic of the Player's car at World of wheels.
