i have a 89 ta gta and i have been hearing all kinds of different rumours about the 700r4 so people tell me i cant push alot of power through it and others say dont ever gt rid of it they are bulletproof. i am leaning towards the bulletproof considering the car made 275000 befre the tranny gave out. so just wondering on peoples opinions.

There not very strong stock, but with enough money invested, they can be pretty tough

if you want a 4 speed auto you dont have too many options... if you want to stay auto get another one built up for sure

its not a great tranny but its not a bad tranny,
if you were running a pretty much stock 350, with some mild mods, its ok,
but its so far from bullet proof its not even funny,
I've never heard of 1 holding up to any respectible hp
Irocnparts built his to the 9 and it lasted about 4000km with a 12 second engine

thats because theres not alot of people that can build a good tranny, they arent easy to make good, theres ALOT of tricks and trades to it. a 700r is basically a 4l60 without the computer. stock they are marginal trannies, good for only mild duty and not alot of beating. but you can make a 9 sec capable 700 and 4l60 that will be reliable 100% problem is, nobody local can it seems, you gotta send it to the states. im going 4L60 in my camaro but im shipping it to the eastcoast to CPT trans, they have a sexellent rep for their 4L's and run many in high powered f boobies even into 9 sec track cars. and for 1000 usd plus shipping for a tranny that will take anything i plan on throwing at it, thats alot better then the 2-3k people charge here for a timebomb thats still stock mostly.

its a 700r/4l60 thing, its a servo in the pump that has more piston area providing a firmer shift into 2nd gear, but this causes more problems then good when other changes arent made, e.g.
to make the transmission shift harder into second gear, they change to a Corvette servo piston, which has more apply serface area. The 700R4 3/4 clutch pack usually burns up, as a direct result of a few different problems, all of which are not addressed by most technicians. Number one: the 2nd gear band must release when the 3/4 clutches apply, to produce a 2nd to 3rd shift, so, when they increase the apply area of the band,(to make the 2nd gear shift harder), they also make the band release more slowly, and, together, with the 3rd apply hole, they drilled out, to make the 3/4 clutches apply more quickly, they produce a "bind up" in the 700 which causes the 3/4 clutches, and the 2nd gear band, to burn up, prematurely, due to excessive heat. (Remember, the original problem with a 700R4 is premature 3/4 clutch burn up, which has just been made worse by the technician who "improved" the unit)
theres a small one of many issues with the 700r......

also 700r4's got a huge 2-3 gear ratio jump,
unless you are buying a new set of planetarys, you're fucked
its pretty much like trying to shift from 2 to 4th with a 5 speed

th400 still has to be built right, and unless you go manual valvebody, it will still be vulnerable. but you lose streetability if you go manual. the key is to get one built correctly, easier said then done lol. im sending mine to a guru i found, not messing around with them out here, everyones a hero sandwich.

not to stay away but to realize theres more then that mod that needs to be done, and a corvette servo is just a better OEM part in one thing. the sonnax billet servo is far better from what ive been hearing

autos are for people that like hydraulic actuated transmissions, and i guess my street car will be for girls, and my other one is ok :P i love laying the boots onto manual cars with autos. miss a shift, not quick enough shift? awww thats too bad :D

1.75 to a 1.00 isnt bad at all. no dogging here. maybe if you leave it in D in a stock tranny lol i hate my stock 4L, its driving patterns are so gay, i miss my th350 that was prepped. so much better to drive and perform. but thats why you got to modify those things to make them work the way they are supposed to. once mines done, its onto the laptop to tune it to my specs, and i guarantee it will be no dog, especially with the matched converter going in. nothing but crisp, fast, instant redline shifts :D

one stock 700r4 is not identical to the next. we're talking a transmission that went through several generations of shittyness.
when gm realized they were shit, they tried to fix them. burning 3/4 clutch packs is really expensive to cover under warranty, especially with the most popular automatic transmission in 3rd gens.
i've had 700r4 from 1984 that was a weak peice of shit, the input shaft on that thing broke in 3 places behind a 305 with not very high mileage
1989-1992 were excellent years for a 700r4 stock
the one that's in my car now went through 200,000km of very abusive driving in calgary summer heat before it threw a clutch band from being run low on fluid. now it's got a good hard kit and beefier clutches. it never slips
i wouldn't agree with throwing a stroker behind one, but keep in mind on the limper gm engines, having a very steep 1st gear is a good thing.

thats like me going from 2nd to 4th gear
you'll fall way out of your power band
autos are all dogs, for trucks or for 1/4 mile cars only, gay on the street
with 3.42's shifting 2-3 at 77mph @ 6000rpm you'll fall to 3500rpm, with a 6 speed shift 2-3 you'd fall to 4500rpm at 75mph

the team that designed the 700r4 was thinking:
a. this will be a fairly smooth transmission that most people will be happy with within the warrantied life of their vehicle, and it'll jump off the line pretty good too!
b. some retarded throttle-stomping tire smoking motherfucker 16 year old that thinks he knows how to drive is gonna be able to hammer the shit out of this thing behind a ported out stroker after it has 300,000k on it, and it won't even break a sweat!
c. lets just chuck a bunch of crap in a fancy looking housing and hope it breaks in half, it'll be hilarious. plus it will be limp enough that camaros will lose their entire reputation for a performance vehicle!
