View Full Version : blast from the past : amps
so I was going to buy some new amps
but was doing some clearing out of the storage and found these.

PPI 4100AM 4x25 (for the inside)
PPI 4200AM 4x50 (for the subs)
hope fully I can find the wire harness for them. :noes: and assuming they work
Pioneer GM X722 (not too sure about this one)
and a MTX RT-X02 cross over.
Or buy new stuff.

those ppi's are supposed to be great times arn't they? sweet find!!!!
I used to have them set up in my civic coupe to power the insides(4100) and a 12 in a bandpass box(4200) and it used to hit very hard.

the system was done by Ralph's Radio in vancouver and it used to pound.

yeah I was thinking of getting new stuff,
it is old but its good junk(2% loss).going to wire this stuff up any way, just to hear how it sounds.

ya i'd use it. I wouldn't expect a night and day difference myself with using new stuff
but if you go to sell it, i'll take it off your hands for the right price

i ran a mrd-f505 v12 expert 4 channel alpine from 98' that ran 2 fronts and the rear 2 ch. were bridged and ran into 2 ohm with 2 svc alpine ZR 12" subs from 98' as well, ported in the trunk of a 79 camaro. and pulled off 135 dB back in the day lol. all i did was take out the 25x2amp fuses and put 30's in hah. amp was rated for 75wx4 or 150w bridged. oldschool powned.

i dunno, it was at a db drag race thing years back. whatever measuring tool they use to measure that stuff. i used a bass tone cd.

there's nothing wrong with oldschool power.. i run a couple pheonix M50s for my subs..
sure they're a bit clunky just to make 245w rms bridged with reasonably low distortion, and they still manage to dim my headlights with 2 farads of caps when i run them at 2 ohms, but they were free..

3 wire, alt and batt upgrade is worlds better, i agree, caps unnecessary.

the old mics were 8-10 db above the new pressure sensors used in competition.
so that 135 was more like a mid-high 120

a buddy and I did a 136.9 in his 90 civic hatch with a jbl cs200.1 (200 watts rms) and a single bassworx 12.3. That was at the dash on my pressure sensor...we also did 163.7 in the port. 8)
That car also now does 149.3 on my sensor at the dash with a single 12, single amp  I wonder who built it.
those PPI amps look homo
that they do,almost had them painted to match my car when i first got them.but would have been bad for heat.

thats really good, a civic will be louder though, its such a small space and its a hatch. :(

small space doesnt matter much..my explorer is doing 55s and is louder than all the crxs in canada.
the civic is a hatch but the box that we used will work very well in a trunk car aswell. bit of an oddball design though  jesse has seen it

same car as kaylas..she bought it off of another competitor. 4kw isnt a whole lot of power for competiting believe it or not.

i dont think that sub will blow even with 8k to it. but we'll see i guess. im letting another guy use the good battery from that car so i might not have the juice to supply to amps

Ok guys, i've had a few so I might piss some of you off. I worked alot with those amps when I started in the industry and would almost give my left nut to own a pair like he has. Those of you who are new to the game (within the last 10 years) Really have no idea what a quality amp is. Those were the musclecars of their day. The engineers who designed those amps built them to perform but most of all built them to sound good. To buy amps today with the quality and components they have would cost well over $1500. So imo keep what you have, get someone who knows their shit to put it together, tune it and enjoy.

basically what he said
you get too many people who just judge by numbers, wow 3000 watts. that must be loud!!!!!! then then might realize thats peak, then they might also realize efficency with power and manget size. You'd be suprised and annoyed with the amount of people trying to tell me a sub is goign to pound or is louder than anothe because of this HUGE magnet. of course it helps. but whos to say its a stronger manget?
I'm goign out on a limb myself for this example but look at old school vacume amps. from what i've came acrossed. they are low wattage ratings, from what I recall (6 years ago I was into this stuff), yet they have some of the 'richest' sound and are very sought after. this is for home audio that I'm reffering too. some new amps with vacume tubes like Mcintosh, goes for tens of thousands of dollars, but has less wattage than your 299 special that some highschool kid things is going to blow the doors off of the 15,000 dollar McItosch amp.
I find it really comes down to having to hear it. some company might use some crappy class A amp or something, but who's to say they havne't engineered it and made it beter, and will nwo be a better amplifer than class D's
look at pyramid, numbers all seem great and dandy, they make it look decent, but its shit compared to similar competitor audio equipment.
