i've watched the dollar situation murder local carlots as well as my business over here in a matter of a week
to start with,
'07 corvette base model: $52,590 MSRP in washington
'07 corvette base model: $68,565 MSRP in victoria
that's 16 grand price difference.... and it's probably mostly GM canada's greed that's at fault, it doesn't cost THAT much to import a vehicle.
and since $52,590USD is now about $52,590CDN, and duty, and travel time sure doesn't add up to 16 grand.. who the hell is going to buy a new car in canada anymore?
it's killing the business i'm in too, a 2000 watt honda generator is $1749 here, and $1079 in washington. (margin in both markets is like 6% on those, so dealers can't do shit all about it). you can phone up a dealer in washington and have one shipped over to your door in a day or two, and probably pay $150 in duty at the most.
maybe it'll be an effective equalizer so we don't get ripped off so badly on so many things anymore ;) i hate buying from americans because i hate americans

they have been fucking us on prices for along time before the us dollar took a shit

yeah, they have, but when you add up the overhead of:
- a trip to the states or massive (and slow delivery) freight
- importing fees like duty
- time wasted
- lazyness
the difference in price before was marginal enough so people didn't care enough to go to the us
now we've gone from being gouged to being stabbed

yes and its ashame the small guy has to suffer because of the greediness of the big players. i especially like how they will not sell to canadians on most of the car lots in the states. because they say they are protecting the canadian dealer ships witch they kinda are. but why not just bring the prices down so we don't have to go across the line.

You can't buy a new car in the states as these international companies have exclusive regional rights but used vehicles from the US are a bargain. Canadian car prices will and are dropping, Porsche of Canada just dropped their prices 10% across the board, look for the others to do the same soon.

that's funny, i just went to washington last month with a friend of mine to buy a brand new dodge ram from a dealership.. we didn't have any trouble bringing it back..
i've heard of lots of other people doing it too

honda is a weird one;
honda canada and honda usa are completely isolated companies, they have no relationship with honda usa besides the occasional cross-shipping of parts.. not only are the price levels completely different, but the products destined for canada have feature differences, and i'm not just talking emmisions control or daytime running lights..
also honda has a fucked up master plan, they are going to eliminate every honda power equipment, marine, and motorcycle dealer in the next few years, and integrate those products into their larger car lots, making an exclusive box-store type thing. i don't know how they're planning to rig boats on a car lot, i doubt they've thought it through very well
that's when their prices will get closer to the level of the usa, when their major dealers regain control of all aspects of their sales output.

Honda is kind of muffed up. 80% of the cars we see are made in the USA, only the S2000 and the Fit are still made in Japan.
should see the Honda's in Japan though, the accord is a completely different car, so are the vans. The van is more of a sport wagon in Japan... lol, 210hp Vtec in them as well.. pretty quick. There are tons of different Honda's taht US/Canada will never see either.
Theres talk about a new Integra to hit Japan though.
The NSX is going to be pretty cool, a 500hp V10.. lol, thats Lambo territory there

uhh yes you can buy brand new cars from the states, it's just like buying a used car in the US and importing.
The only time when you can't buy cars in the US is some dealers down there will/have refused to sell to Canadian buyers because they don't want to steal business from their fellow Canadian franchisers. It has nothign to do with "regional rights" which is something you just made up
