so i know that the early years of the 700r4 are junk and the later ones are fairly good. my question is what was the first year gm changed them and made them good?

I think they got better the 88 or 89, wasn't long after 350 TPI went in the camaro

1987 and later got all of the incremental improvements they'd been making throughout the 80s.. aux valve body, stronger ring gear, 30 spline input shaft blah blah blah

88-up is generally regarded as being the best because they upgraded the 3-4 clutch packs, but anything 87-up is good

Bob's built my 1987 700R4 which was awesome - but i just pulled it to instal a T56.
Someone buy the auto! I spent $2500 on it at Bob's last summer not including the 2800 RPM stall. About 3500k's on it now. I'll let it go for $1800 complete.

back when I was looking for a tranny builder I didn't hear many good things about bobs driveline. About the only thing I did hear is that they charged WAY too much for something that was no better than other builds.
your 2500 seems like a good example. Perhaps the business is actually standing behind their product now?
