if it's the original transmission, it's a 700R4, 99% it'll need a rebuild, basic rebuild no upgrades will cost you $1000-$1500

TV cable adjustment will do some weird things, so try readjusting it (google), but it probably wont help

i dont know of any good spots in van, but if you look in the good guys/bad guys section someones got one about a dans transmission i believe...apparently they were reasonable...
also if i were you, call tcs products for a rebiuld kit, take the tranny out yourself and then get someone to rebuild it...alot cheaper than someone doing all the work then raping you on the cost for the kit...

i second that, if you take the transmission out yourself it saves you nearly half the rebuild cost

half the labour when you take the whole car in is removal/reinstallation, and it's not difficult, just a lot of stuff to unbolt

best bet
buy a B&M rebuild kit and get someone to do it
as for the labour, id recommend doing it yourself too, however, if you dont know what youre doing DONT... when you put it back in you neeed to fill it properly and set the TV cable, if you fuck that up ull lose the tranny again

Nevco Transmissions is pretty good

thanks guys for all the info....ill probably pull it myself... i have helped pull a tranny b-4...it seems like it will save me a shit load...i was thinking about gettin a used tranny... but i dont want any problems so maybe a rebuld would be best..,..... how do these trannys normally go? i mean i was reving my car kinda hard and all of the sudden i lost 3rd and 4th...no noise nothing..just gone? any thoughts on that? or is it just how these trannys are? i know on my old blazer it would grind a bit.. and eventually it just went. and my dads ford same deal?

most premature failures with a 700r4 start because of tv cable misadjustment

it's supposed to tell the transmission to build pressure when you stomp on it, so it can handle the load properly, and shift harder so stuff doesn't slip through clutch bands too much, and burn the shit out of them

very common for the 3-4 clutch pack to get toasted over time, and that's sped up a lot if the transmission doesn't realize that you're about to chuck 300+ foot-pounds of torque behind it right away

it's just how they are. they arent' bad transmissions they just aren't built to handle agressive driving and higher-than-stock horsepower (but they can be beefed up, if you want to go that way, it just costs a lot.. shift kit helps a bit to stop them from slipping)

I have a 700r4 I can part with. It's attached to my 305 off a 92 z28.
It's got 90k km on it and I want 550 for it.

700R4s are junk. Mine did the same thing about 3x. I remember it started shifting a bit harder and then bam stopped working. No sound no nothing. The reason being 3rd and 4th gear are on the same .... I cant remember what its called, but essentially when you lose 3rd, 4th goes with it... same band I think its called. Pretty much the most common problem. Weve got tons of used trannies for cheap if u want one.

got to understand planetary gears to get a auto tranny,
but 700R4's fail cause they don't dump pressure fast enough in the previous gear causing the bands to slip which means premature wear

That is weird but Benz Automatic Transmission is really good! Benz is just the name. I had my tranny rebuilt under a second buyers warranty from there and they did a good job.

I hear there is some tranny's on Hastings Street haha
