im looking to put 4.56 gears in my malibu (7.5 rear) and on summit racing there are two different gears to buy. One is a 3 series carrier that is more expensive but with gears numerically higher than 3.23 you need a special cross pin, and 2 series carrier where you need a special cross pin below 3.03
how do i know which carrier i have?

I believe the carry over is 3.08, so if you have 3.08 or less gears (2.73, 2.56 so on) then your a two series .... If it is an 80s malibu chances are 99% you have a 2 series.

ok, first of all 4.56 in that, dont you think thats kind of steep lol. what size tire and what tranny? th350 i presume. better hope you like 3000+ rpm cruising and reving the shit outta it lol ;D and as for the carrier, i havent looked but its usually a 3.08 or something around the and up is 3 series, and the taller gears are 2 series. it should tell you right on the site. as for telling what you got, several things can be done, if its got the diff tag still look at that, or do the turn and mark trick, not the most accurate but it ballparks you, or pop the cover off, and do the ol pinion vs ring gear teeth check, or read the identity tag on the ring gear. ;D

right now i have 245/50/16s on the back running a saginaw 4 speed.
i dont drive it on the highways at all i have my camaro for that...i just have a spare posi rear end that i want to throw some race gears in. then if i ever care about my gas mileage (not likely) i can just swap rear ends back to my 2.41s i have now.
4.56s might be a bit steep i could just go with 4.11s but thats less fun

thats fine, there are plenty more factors then just gas mileage to determine the gear ratio. a real big one is motor power and rpm range. you can actually make a mild motor a real dog by over gearing it, those tires arent that tall to boot. realistically id go for a 3.42 or 3.73 unless you want to make a strong running motor with the right torque curve and powerband to suit the rest of the setup. otherwise you'll actually be slowing yourself down, and wearing everything out 10x more and spending way more on gas.

everything, heads, cam, intake, valvetrain, rotating assembly weight/strength, tranny, rearend gearing, carb, exhaust, cid etc. all are important factors :)

yeah but mostly its the cam thats the brain of the motor. the rest are the arms and legs ;D
