can anyone tell me why my car is blowing blue smoke when i rev it up? i just had a complete rebuild done, fresh bore .30 over, with cast rings and it now has about 1800 miles on it since i dropped it back in but its still blowing smoke. should my rings not be broken in yet? i thought cast rings were quick to break in or will it take a bit longer still?
btw, i suffered and broke it in nicely, varied the rpms and didnt rev it over 3500 rpm in the first 1000 km's

sounds like a up top problem, valve guides/seals, how much smoke? were they the old heads you used before? id look in the top end, that would be your best bet :)

i just had a complete rebuild done on it, fresh bore, new pistons, rods, new cam, fully balanced. the only thing i didnt do was the heads and i had my 202's rebuilt about 15 000 kms ago with new seats and valve guides

could be the valve seals. who did your rebuild. maybe they didnt do it right.
does it burn blue on start up? all the time? only when you floor it?

no the rebuild was done right, i know the guy and he owns a machine shop, he used to build spring car motors. he's got a 700 hp alcohol injected 350 sitting on his dyno lol.
anyways i doubt its the valve seals, they were just replaced not too long ago. ive got a funny feeling its a valve cover gasket cuz i suddenly have a oil leak and with my high volume oil pump, i think the sudden rush of oil is leaking out onto my header. i hope anyways

if its leaking onto the header theres no way your gonna burn blue from it. i say take it back to the guy who built it and tell em to fix it. ill never trust a shop to build a block. i had one built once, he too was a reputable builder in the area and spent years in the drag racing scene, needless to say the motor wasnt built right. if your confident on the bottom end the only thing i can suggest is the top end, do you have a crankcase vacuum tube thingy running into your intake? maybe thats causign it?

do you mean a pcv valve? and yes i do and its new. the reason i think its the valve cover is i had a similar problem before and i havnt checked yet but i have a funny feeling its not blowing the blue smoke out of the tailpipes. all i can tell from inside the car when im driving it is that when i floor it theres a blue cloud behind my car. i'll have to get someone to stand behind it when im sitting there parked. i can also smell a bit of burning oil when im sitting there idling too so thats why i tend to think its just a leaky valve cover gasket. if i get time i'll check tomorrow.

hmmm, well that will be the first ive heard of a car burning blue from a external leak. if you have a huge puff of blue when you accelerate i highly doubt its from it leaking onto the header, but you never know. but the external valve cover leak may be the reason you smell out while idling. well try and tighten her up and let us know.

I had a problem with my valve cover gaskets too but when the oil went onto the headers there was no blue smoke, mostly white dirty smoke, nothing compared to blue smoke out the tail pipes.

they could have put the top ring in upside down, its not uncommon, I've seen it done twice

actually ive been working 7 days a week, 12 hour days for the last little while and havnt even had a chance to look into it or compression test it or anything yet but ill let you know what i find out
thanks
...im having a similar prob w/ smoke, but from my valve cover . *That recirc pipe leading to my intake. * Its blowing oily smoke back into the throttle. *
...After nights of /vacc/fuel-press/and sensor testing, *I found my MAP sensors readings where reverse. *Meaning-as I increased rpm, *somehow my manifolds vaccum press increased also. *Just before I was gonna give up and take her in, *I happened to take off my intake filter for cleaning and noticed that a plastic pipe connector that I had used to connect the secondary air injection tube to my filter had somehow wiggeled off. * All i could find was one half of it. *After kickin myself in the ass and smacking the backside of my head, *It made sense to me....
...it broke off, *eventually sucked into the intake manifold, *and If this is true. *I not sure how far in did this piece go into
my motor
