haha that reminds me when I was 16 and low on cash, I went and bought some Pyramid subs and thought "oh good 350watt rating" yeah well some shitty 250W amp blew both of them within 2-3 months....

one time back in the day i hooked one of my alpine ZR 12" to a pyramid "900 watt" amp, turned it up to a regular radio listening volume and it thermal shutdown in 30 sec hehe, i guess my sub wanted more then 10 watts

this is exactly right...you can usually get away with running twice the rms rating of the speakers you are using if they're in the correct enclosure and crossed over well enough. As long as its clean power.

case and point i have two 500 watt rms mtx 8000s in my car getting 1250 watts a piece and no problems so far. Its been two months ish and i like my music loud

most people will run too much power to a sub rather than not enough because if they run too little they feel the need to turn the gain up too high and send a clipped signal
