It's a '97 GMC Sierra 2500 extended cab long box 4x4. Auto, power everything, and most importantly it's got a 6.5L turbodiesel. It sat for 2.5 years with a bad injector pump. I'm not going to blab about what I paid, but I made an offer and it was accepted, and I'm sure most of you are aware of how poor/cheap I am. Plan now is to take care of the niggly interior and cosmetic issues, then replace the injector pump, injectors, lift pump, glow plugs, and do all the fluids and filters. If I drive it nicely it should easily get 20mpg, which is pretty much why I've been looking for a diesel. No more gas guzzling 4.3, plus it's got lots of cab space and a full 8' box, which is pretty useful in my line of work.

Thanks. It's no Duramax, but then again even once I plunk down the cash to get it on the road it won't put me in debt. As long as it gets good fuel mileage and I don't have to owe money on it, I'll be very happy

those 6.5's are grenades, hope it works out for you

6.5's are fine if you treat them nice. Cooling was the biggest issue, blocks and heads in the earlier ones tended to crack (GM upgraded the cooling system in later models), that and they weren't built sturdy enough for heavy duty hauling. If they had to work too hard the crank would go. I don't have any excavators to tow around so it should do okay
Duramax swap has been done, there's even a book you can buy that shows how to do it, but the motor alone would be significantly more money than I paid for the truck itself. It would be pretty cool, but I'm pretty poor, so that's just how it goes. If I had more money I'd just get a Duramax crew cab

g/fs dad had basicly same truck except 1 ton crew cab for a work truck, he literally gets trucks and runs them as hard as he can into the ground, had insane millage and still ran good, just the rest of the thing was so fucked and beat to hell
it'll be a good truck, it lasted way longer than his average truck, hes fucking destroyed this dodge he had, was brand new, maybe had it 3 years, got tired of all the time it was in the shop

I had a 6.5 probably 10 years ago now, truck worked pretty well for the time I had it despite their reputation for being grenades.

I'm pretty stoked to get this thing going, every time I put gas in the Green Bastard I wish I was next to a diesel pump instead. If it lasts a few years without grenading I'll have got my money back out of it several times over...

ARRRRRGH these things are cunts to work on. Glow plugs, injectors, lift pump, interior issues taken care of. Working on getting the sag out of the doors and putting them back together. Got all new oem lock cylinders, replacing the door handles as well. Replaced the ignition cylinder already, that was pretty much a whore of a job too, at least it looks pretty hard to steal. Got boost and EGT gauges, still waiting for pillar pod, going to be cranking up the boost a couple PSI and removing the vacuum operated wastegate system. In the process of straightpiping the exhaust (3"). Engine has high compression compared to others so lots of boost is a no go without lowering compression, but these GM-X turbos are crap anyways and can't boost efficiently above 12psi or so (stock is around 6, I'm hoping to run 9-10 without a boost fooler). Eventually I'll just get an ATT and Heath GL4. Bought and paid for a complete IP on Ebay at the beginning of last month, guy finally just shipped it today, I'm not exactly pleased with the situation...

I already started a PayPal dispute, couldn't get any response from the guy, sent a bunch of messages before he finally responded. I've got a tracking number now at least. Once it gets here it better fucking work or I'm escalating to a claim and getting my money back. First negative experience ever on Ebay, it's been really good to me so far

Congrats on truck, sucks about the Ebay deal. Have fun with those doors, seems after they sag once, you realign them and 6 months later they've sagged again. The handles on those old ones were a stupid design too. The doorskin itself is to flimsy at the handle and always gets warped and bent.

Oh they're up there...I'd think twice if it was a gas truck, but for a diesel it's got reasonable k's.

I've only worked on a few, of those GM diesels but they are cunts,
its the worst when they are in a van

Did they put TD's in the vans or just n/a versions? If I had to work on a TD van I'd probably just burn it...the turbo is in the way of EVERYTHING
