View Full Version : My camaro 350 build is slowly coming together.

Thought some of you guys might get a kick out of my engine build. Its nothing crazy, but it should make a pretty powerful little motor for my camaro.
Heres the block/rotating assembly:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c214/joshm101/block.jpg
Its an 010 casting 350 block, bored 30 over. Its got flat top pistons, and "pink" rods which will apparantly handle 500 ponies, regardless of that, ive been assured they will easily handle anything my motors ever gonna put out. I was going to just paint the engine and throw it in, but i decided like my 305, its gonna get boring fast, and i want something reliable and long lasting. I then decided to replace all the bearings in the block with clevite 77's (I've been told there awesome bearings). I decarboned all the pistons, and reinstalled them. The bores still have the cross hatching from honing, and they're clearly fresh, no gauges or anything.
Cam wise im going with a comp magnum 270. Its .468 lift, 270/270 duration
For my heads, im going against most people who say i shouldnt run them, and using my 416 casting, 58cc chamber heads. Ive been told by a few people who know there small blocks that they're decent heads, from what I've learned, i understand they lack flow and will run out in the top end. I dont want a high revving engine, it would be nice, but i really just want that tire shredding torque. Currently im finishing porting the heads. I've got one finished porting, the other needs to be ported, then they will be painted chevy orange to match and assembled. It should be 10.5:1 compression.
For an intake i chose an edelbrock performer, ive been told they are a great all around intake. Carb wise, im thinking a 650 cfm, over carbing will apparently do more bad then good. Other things ive got so far are an MSD 6AL box, with accel distributor. All I need for my engine to go back in is a flywheel/clutch. My only issue is the transmission. Its a t-5 with a blown fifth gear. Ive been told that if i drive it easy it will last me until i can get a t56. My only issue is flywheels, I have one flywheel for my motor brand new, but it runs a 12" clutch. Will this flywheel work with my t-5 if i go for one of those "mini starters ?" Besides the flywheel/clutch, i need some headers (im gonna go long tubes), and a carb.
Picked up some fancy gauges off a guy on craigslist for $60, figured it was way too good of a deal to pass up, all i really wanted was the tach.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c214/joshm101/gauges.jpg
All in all, im hoping for a 300 horsepower engine, and i think i'll get it !

Might have more than a flywheel issue without a cam............:D

Do you have the cam already?
I ran the comp 280 magnum and swapped to a comp xe274 and actually made more top end power with a better low end and broader tq and power curve.

6300 and you want more? Considering your motor is a pile of random new and used parts you'd think that be enough. How much RPM do you think you will get out of it and still have something left to drive? Just asking. It's not like your trying to hang with Cup cars at Martinsville.

Just put 2000 km on it and just changed the oil on it this weekend and took her for a hard run and haven't advenced it yet.. didnt lay down to 6300-6500. My tach is gone at 6000 and it was well past
It will pull 7+ plus without laying out once I get it up to 10-12 advance.
And I know what everyone is going to say it was "valve float"
No its not

you'll be shitting yourself man.
just about everyone on this site said dont do it with a 58cc head because you will get detonation and so on and so on..
Well i've been going back and forth to see the gf in vic every couple days over the malahat (dont know if everyone knows what that is) but the car never has (dieseled) once.
Im really happy with this build!

break the engine in for 1000-1500km being somewhat decent on it. (I didnt whale on it till 1500) at 6-8 degress advanced.
change oil and filter
6 degrees was my safe spot

you make it sound line timing is so critical for brake in
chevyman
11-16-2009, 10:38 PM
as far as im concerned it is.
keep it mellow for break in then it wont break when its broken in.

base timing has little to do with anything, total timing and the curve are way more important

back to the original thread.....
that flywheel wont work with the t-5 bellhousing. you'll have to get a flywheel for a manual trans camaro (from 85 or earlier will work for sure)

Wahooo ! Got my valve guide and stem seals today. The seals are teflon positive lock seals. I didnt put o-rings on the exhaust valves however because i was told they will just harden up, and could cause a sticky valve :ohboy: Threw on my edelbrock elite valve covers for storage. Heads should be going on anytime now :)

Tomorrow should be a big day if it doesnt rain on me. Planning on finishing prepping, and starting paint on my engine compartment. Bigbird on the board here gave me a centerforce clutch (thanks so much!), stoked, all i need is a throwout bearing and a flywheel and the engine/new trans can go in. Then all i need is a fuel pressure regulator, carb and long tubes...after that build the exhaust, throw my stereo back in, piece together my interior (after it gets ripped apart for dynamat, finish the sanding/paint on my hood and faster then you can say shamwow i'll be done. Im hoping for the end of january to have a running car. :D

For a bone stock tune. I dont know anything about EFI, and I KNOW its a bad idea to run my 350 with stock 305 tbi with a stock tune. I dont care about injection at this stage in the game. If you wanna go build a 350 with that cam, and a 305 tbi computer and stock tune...have fun

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c214/joshm101/engineindayone3Small.jpg
All hell broke loose putting the tranny in. Tried to lift it out by myself through the engine bay, tranny fluid pours everywhere, try to get it out, almost drop it on the car. Wait for a buddy to come over. During that wait i start cleaning the driveway cause my parents freak when the driveway is covered in oil (for good reason because it wouldnt be the first time..or the second...or the third... or the fourth...cant even count anymore  ). So i mop up everything i can, and start spraying it off with the hose, leaves go down the drain, and i clog it. Unclogged the drain, then started getting everything ready. Finished putting the new tranny in (still need to hook up torque arm and driveshaft). Had to transport my motor on the stand over grass about 500 feet LOL. Lost my clutch bolts, my mom went to the store to get me some (too dirty to go in the car), she comes back with ARPs <3<3<3 Her donation to the project she says :)

2) finishing painting the licence plate cover (overspray on the camaro)

4) get rid of he canadian tire steering wheel, looks like something off the go karts at castle fun park
other then that, your car looks good.

I dont get the painting the license plate frame thing ? The flames will be gone soon enough, i wanna get it running and driving, then its getting painted. You dont notice them very much anymore when your looking at it, the hood attracts most of your attention, but i hate them too. And the steering wheel is uber gay, i need a new one, but again, money thing, so once the drivetrain is good..

Shitty deal, itll be running tomorrow.
Huge issue that i overlooked. Its an old block, so staggered bolt pattern starter, and 153 tooth flywheel that needs straight bolt pattern starter. So we need to drill/tap a hole tomorrow, then the starter can go in. Then i need to run a couple wires, drop in the rad, i think tomorrow will be the day boys n girls.

Josh_M
02-07-2010, 11:43 AM
Heres what happened. When i put it back together it TOTALLY slipped my mind, Upon further inspection pilot bushing appeared to be the wrong size, and totally demolished ! Getting those things out is fun. What i ended up doing was renting a puller from canadian tire, POS felt like it was gonna break and it wasnt worth my $55 so i took it back. Took a bolt that just barely fit, hammered it in to get it started, threaded it all the way in and it pushed itself out like a dream, too easy. Trannys in now, just have to hook up torque arm, x member and little things, but i have to do inventory at work tonight until midnight, and i work until 5 tomorrow, so it wont be fixed for a while yet...yuck.:ohboy:
And on a lighter note, to anyone doing a tranny swap, it is 100 times easier to bolt the bellhousing to the engine, then the trans to the bellhousing, rather then connecting trans/bell to engine. We messed with it a bit then decided to just try bolting the bell to engine, and wow was it ever easier.

What a fucking dream, bolted it on, hooked up the choke, had to adjust the idle a tiny biit but fuck, more power, most likely better gas mileage, and no bogs...i swear to god it feels like fuel injection !!

We messed with it a bit then decided to just try bolting the bell to engine, and wow was it ever easier.
put the bellhousing up and hook up the clutch slave,
that way when you get the tranny in the splines of the clutch disc, and it won't go into the pilot bearing, just get somebody to puch the clutch pedal a little bit, it slides right in.
and the top bellhousing bolts are way easier to get when the tranny is not attached to it,
to get the pilot bearing out fill the center with grease find a bolt that fits tight in the bearing and give it a tap it in and keep stuffing grease in till it pops
