Ive been preping my engine bay, decided im just going to paint it myself in my neighbors garage hes got lots of light and room. I degreased everything, started hitting it with scotchbrite. should i just primer it after scotchbrite? or should i hit it with some sandpapers? what grit? i got the 09 STI grey paint for it. primer, clear, reducer ect. i dont know the process at all. can somone give me a breif step by step? i got a nice devilbliss gun i hope it helps me do a better job. and i got a cheapo for primer.

scotch bright is fine for prep

once its primed wet sand the primer with 400-600 grit

im getting mixed reviews, i wanted to do a base/clear but im being told either do a single stage semi-gloss or a satin. i want it to be nice and shiney or will that look off?

Well since you're in there already you should talk to Blake Carstensen and see what he did to his third gen's engine bay.

all depends how far you want to go. I started going it and got a little carried away but very happy.

here are a few other topics discussing about it.

not that I'm super qualified but I ended up putting over 100 hrs into it, a few redo's included!

wow thats exactly what im wanting mine to look like but i dont think id go as far with the smoothing. mine is stripped down just as much as yours. did you strip the paint rite down to bare metal? and did you just use regular body filler?

just sanded the paint, you'll get some bare spots. lots of wet sanding, smoothing etc. used regular body filler, XS gold or something.

spend some time on it, as you can see very few people have the patience to do that.

use quality paint, if you have a place to spray i could see if the painter I use for my stuff is interested in shooting the paint on for you, granted you have everything ready to go. of course he would probably want a couple hundred bucks.

Blake. what did you use to prep it for primer? a guy at a shop i know is going to

primer/paint/3 coats of clear it for $350 hes covering the materials. but i have to have

everything ready to go for him. 180 grit kinda thing and all the filling? i have it fully

degreased and removed any thick stuff with scotchbrite pads.

well if you've sanded it and degreased it, your ready to go, just make sure you've sanded all the pain in the ass spots that you only seem to be able to get with your fingers. I don't know if your shop is heated or not, but hopefully he knows what he's doing. the guy I recommend has a great repuation and works at a rennasance collision in abbotsford.

your probably going to need 2 seperate applications of primer. but all depends how maticulous u want to be.

That blue engine bay looks great. Lots of work for sure and well worth it when you are putting cleaned up or new parts back in.
