I have a 98 WS6 with the Auto and when I put it in any gear or sometimes when I accelerate there is a prominent Clinking noise coming from the driveline, either the drive shaft or the rear end, does anyone know what it could be? It kind of sounds like small steel teeth clipping each other.

is it a click or a clunk, clunk on accelration and when you shift could be tranny mount, could be u-joints as well,
could be alot of things :-\
maybe pop off your diff cover and spin the rear look for missing teeth

i had a clicking noise come from my tranny right after i had it rebuilt.... i thought it was the flexplate at first, but didn't know, so i took it back, and had the rebuilders (BENZ Transmission) take a look at it, it turns out its was a little shaft or sumthing that ran my pump in my tranny... i dunno if that helps u any, just thought i'd tell my story :P
i say take it to a tranny shop, autos are too complicated internally for an amateur to diagnose

but that would be a LOUD clunk when he hits the gas, that wouldn't make a clicking sound though that he is experiencing

Definately not a clunk, It sould like the yoke on the tranny is slipping but I have to take it in and find out.
