View Full Version : converting a 305 to a 350
What is involved in converting a stock F code 305 (195hp) to a 350 ie 5.7L??
or what is easy to do to get the hp up to the equivalent of the 5.7L??
Anyone done this before??

Just buy a 350, talk to Mike (IROCNParts) He'll hook you up :)
You sound like a loyal Mike fan but i want to keep the engine in the car and I have heard people changing the cam and what not to produce more power.

Hahahah not soo much a loyal mike fan as I'm a 350 fan, hell if I still had my last 350 I'd offer that. The amount you're going to spend to be up par (cam, head work, intake+labour?) alot of people just arent happy with the results, but what do I know I have a 327 :P
Do you have a 350, What year.
I sold my 5.7L 1988 last spring. Now I've got an 89 5.0L and I'm picking up this 89 4 spd IROCU

If it's a 89 then you will need at least a post-85 block so you get the correct rear main seal.
Then if you can get a 87-95 Caprice, F-body or Corvette 350 then all the roller stuff will transfer over. Remember the truck blocks were flat tappet and the production blocks weren't converted over with provisions for the rollers even til like 93 or so. But they still didnt have rollers!

theres one thing your forgeting just like those ricers do, hp isnt everything, even if you could get the hp, you still wont have that torque low or the same feeling then the real thing ;D

the piston size is different as well, the injectors are different the heads are different, the crank is different. Get a 350 long block (with heads) throw your intake on it, and put a set of 22# injectors and vwola, you have a 350. doing it the hard way is a waste of time and money. you can pick up a 350 long block for $1200 and a set of injectors for $200 if THAT!
Ill sell you a set of 24# injectors for $150

Mike's right, 350 is the way to go. My almost stock 305 only goes 13.8's :P
But seriously, if your planning on doing some work on an engine, make it a 350. Its a much more upgradable powerplant.
Thanks for all the info guys. I just got the car yesterday and the difference between the 170hp 305 and my 195hp 305 is pretty evident. The cam is different and it shows. I was thinking the 195hp isn't far off the 225 that the 350 puts out (stock) so I thought of something to tweek the hp abit like going with no cat or two cats instaed of one, kn filters etc.
Those prices for Mike's motors are really tempting though, $1800 for the 350 with 100,000k
We'll see, I'll try the car out more in the spring.
Thanks for all the info

Hey John, you dont wanna put a 350 in that car, the t-5 wont handle it, trust me, leave it the way it is :)
Ya thats the other thing, GM tried it and kept blowing up the rearends and twisting the car.
I am trying to get some ideas to try to push up the hp to the 1990 level of 210, but to do that they ran different pistons.
By the way Mike can you post the pictures of my car under member cars or do I have to do that??

Hope your enjoying the car Mike. It's not a 195 hp 305. It's 220 and 230 with the dual cats if I recall correctly. (might be 210 and 220). Like I told you, just add headers and you will have more hp than the 350 and about the same torque. $250 and a bit of shop time. You will still pass aircare no problem if you keep the cat. The computer will also be fine.

There's a lot of T-5's holding up to 12 second 350's.....you just have to take your foot off the floor between shifts ;)

YOu talkin to me?
I've got a 88 IROC-Z hardtop, it has the G92 package and the 305 TPI. It has no options except DX3 decal and stripe delete and power windows (nope no A/C, makes for a hot summer but faster track times :)) 100% bone stock it ran 15.4@92mph and that was the first time I drove that car. The GM muffler that was on there kinda rusted to pieces like 2 weeks later and I put a Hooker catback on but havent taken it to the track yet. I have tons of goodies for my IROC-Z for the winter time hehe ;D

What was your trap speed? A 92mph trap speed could hit 14.7 Like I said, it was the first time I ever drove the car. I just insured it that day. But yeah mine was 100% bone stock like yours.

No way! Man the most I bet I could squeeze outta mine would be 94mph. I only got one run in. 97mph is like a L98 mph. Yours is a factory freak.

A stock g92 305 5 speed(dual cats with 3.42 gears) car will beat a stock g92 350 auto(dual cats with 3.23 gears) car. A 305 has faster pick up then a 350, 305 has lighter pistons. My cousin builds performance motors he loves the 305 in a street car. If your going to race build a 383, fuck the 350. All your 305 needs is a mild cam, injecters and exhaust you'll be happy. If not put 3.42's in the rear and add some 1 5/8 tube headers with dual cats. Why do you think the players cars are 305's. By the way Mike a 350 and 305 use the same crank.
