Just setting the valves on my Pontiac 400. I have put a comp 282 solid cam in and I was wondering what the proper way to set the valve clearences?

Make sure you find out whether you need to set the "lash" hot or cold. Typically, most solid cams quote the lash needed when "hot". And there is a big difference between hot and cold.

To adjust them, slow tighten down on the poly-lock (assuming full roller rockers) until you come to "zero lash". Zero lash is where you start to feel resistance when you twirl the pushrod under the rocker. Similar as you would do if you were going to adjust a hydraulic lifter.

Then, unlike a hydraulic lifter, you back off/loosen the polylock to obtain the proper lash with a feeler guage. Example, if the required lash is .018", use a .018" feeler gauge under the roller and the top of the valve.

I was setting the valves with the opposite valve at full lift. I need to know when to set the valves.
