Vulcan

definately hold off on the engine mods for now, you can do other things to the car but save for a v8 swap 8)

Do up your suspension first, get it turning like the car is on rails, then you'll have a car that is just ready for a V8.

Any V8 Swap will be made easier with a complete Donor car .... and suprise so many on this site have just that ;D

do out the suspension and save cash for V8 like others have said.

but other mods should i do to the car before i put a V8 in?? and the guy have the car like its on rails?? ??? he said "get it turning like the car is on rails"

and how should a engine cost?????

Vulcan

the term "the car handles like its on rails" means that the suspention is really fucking hard, so it handles really well (like its on rails)...

A donor car is one which is used to donate parts to your other car, same as a donor corpse is used to donate organs to living humans...

as for how much should an engine cost, well it shouldn't cost anything but unfortunatly it does. The price will vary depending on whick block you go with (305 or 350) as well as the condition (new or used) and the parts inside it. check the for sale section, or the buy and sell. that should give you a good start

Hmmm ,if you dont know what a donor car is, me thinks a v8 swap is a wee bit beyond your automotive skill.

Dont bother upgrading the 2.8, its a turd, jus buy a v8 car.

well u can always just do exterior mods, tint the window, maybe change the ground fx to the newer ones and do suspension then find a running v8 and get someone to drop it in for you. or fix up this car and try and resell it and see if you get a bit more and then buy a crappy thirdgen with a v8 in it and build itup!\

either way welcome to the site and good luck!

Vulcan's suggestion of selling your V6 car and getting a V8 car is actually a very good suggestion and the most practical.

The amount of money you are going to spend to upgrade a V6 car (because EVERYTHING needs to be changed), is cost prohibitative. And it is NOT an easy swap either. Starting with a V8 car makes life SO MUCH EASIER.

Continue to drive you good running V6 car, but look for a good V8 car with a burnt out engine and swap in a 350 (or bigger) SBC.

If you are HELL BENT on keeping your V6, the only good swap is a 3.4 from either a 4th Gen Camaro or from GM. You just swap the electronics. You could also swap a cam into the engine (there are a few for the 60* V6). But, for all the money you will spend on a 3.4 (unless you find one in a wrecking yard cheap), you will still get spanked by every V8 Camaro, Firebird or Mustang and end up spending damn near the same as if you just bought a Thirdgen F-body with a burnt out 305 and swapped in a fresh 350.

I'll have an Olds 307 cid V8 w/auto tranny (not sure which one it is exactly, but its got OD) and possibly a rear diff (no clue what ratio) for sale early next year... it'll be really cheap, as in the price of a core, and it only has 92,000 original k's on it

Okay, forget them for a second and get back on track ;D

Things I've done to mine; throttle body bypass, toss a 5 speed in it, bigger sway bars make a huge difference, get rid of the AC if its got it, 17lb/hr disk style injectors help a lot. You could always go with a higher ratio rear end, V8 springs, uh, tons more.

But they are correct on one thing, you can put the same money in a V6 as you could a V8 and the V8 will always be faster. However, if all you're into is making what you got better, there are tons to do!

If you want the most power stock find a 350 car, their only downside is they're all auto (unless someone swapped in a manual or pulled a 305 for a 350). Or you could find a 305 5-speed car and do the swap yourself. I also recommend getting a T/A or Z28 (better suspensions stock than others) and Tuned Port Injection (TPI) is much better than Throttle Body Injection (TBI, not an option on 350). And rear disc brakes are always a plus.

Haha, thanks, it's a '91 RS. I paid $5000 for it back in '97, I paid too much. My engine swap (305 to 350) cost about $3000 (for engine, machining, new flat-top pistons, Comp hydraulic roller cam, installation, etc.)
I think Z28s go for about 4-7 Gs right now (depending on condition and what's been done to them.)

CrazyCanadian
12-11-2004, 08:45 PM
I agree get the V8. I did and I like it. If money is tight, and a Z28 is out of your range, get an RS, at least it is a V8. Now an engine and tranny, engine size 305 comes with a manual or auto tranny while the 350 only comes with a automatic tranny. The 350 comes in the more expensive car while the 305 comes with the V8 RS or cheaper Z28. A TPI(Tuned Port Injection) is better than a TBI(Throttle Body Injection). I own a 91 RS V8 paid 5k for it in 2002, far too much, but back then I knew dick all about cars.

so i should look like a RS with a 305 with auto or manual, and with TPI. or a Z28 with a 305/ 350 with auto or manual, and with TPI. how much u thinking it will cost??? :-[

my 1991 305 RS was $4000.
i payed to much as well, but only becuase the engine was a lemon.
Just swapped in different 305 and a buddy and i did all the work ourselves... total cost was well under a grand.

if you get an RS 305, then go for a set of headers and exhaust and delete the cat. it gets pretty peppy then. might even be enought to satisfy you if you arent looking for hardcore speed.

if u want to find a cheaper Z28 i would recomend an 82 - 85 carbed camaro/firebird. Most of them are between $1500-$3000 in the buysell. Most arent in great shape and are slower from the factory than a TPI/TBI car but can easily be modified for more power. I got mine for $1400 and it can spin the tires so its all good!

if you are a new driver and under about 25 years of age.....keep your present car, get some driving experience, and save all the cash you save on insurance premiums for the purchase of a nice 3 rd gen camaro in a couple of years.
your insurance will be astrinomical on a v-8 with little driving experience and young age......
pay close attention to the forum and learn a bunch about cars and their inherant problems before you loadup on a high powered v-8.....<<<< my 2 cents worth

hey look its sharkslayer :D so anyways...with a 0% discount and just average coverage and stuff, my V6 is abt 2000/year and the IROC is 2500. so, quite a big difference, but its worth it to me. evrery year without an accident u earn a 5% discount, maxing out at 40% after 8 years.
