most the time when i turn on my car there is no check engine light or whatever and it runs beautifully, but once in awhile i will turn it on, and if the check engine light stays on, it runs like crap and all i gotta do is turn it off then on again.
whats up with that nigga?

I've had the same problem with a couple of differant cars before... One time it was the O2 sensor lead, when it wiggled loose, the light would stay on, but sometimes it would get a proper connection and it wouldn't come on. on my truck it was the computer, and was very easy to fix... Disconnect the battery and let the computer re-set itself, then re-connect the battery (I think it only has to be off for like 30 seconds, but i leave it off for about 5 minutes

Well if it's ECM controlled you should be able to flash the trouble code on the ses light by jumping two of the ALDL Pins together, the two on the top right of the connector I believe, use a paper cliip, and then turn the engine to the run position, but DON'T FIRE, that should flash a code, first one will be 12 (ie flash once then twice) it will repeat 3 times then move onto the next code if it has one stored. Then on TGO in the tech articles (which explain all this) it will tell you what each code means, relating to a sensor.

Do the procedure as Drakar points out and then post what the code is. Also, what are the exact specs of your engine (size, type, RPO).
And intermittent SES light can be caused by a number of things.
Or, you can do as 79 Z28 suggests.

turn you key to the on position
jump a peice of wire between the 2 top right side terminals on the connector under your dash then count flashes
it will flash 12 3 times first

Do exactly what they are saying with the wire and count how many times the system light flashes. There willbe a short break when it switches codes. Then ignore the one that flashes 12 times and post the other number and car specs etc etc and we can help

12 is the initiation of the code reader. you are supposed to ignore code 12 and listen to any code after that. If there are none, then i assume either the computer is erasing the code right away(it shouldn't do that) or your light is shorting out

you must have disconnected your battery since the light came on or your distributor could be bad
