Ohhhh to have that kind of money to be able to afford something like that. It's got the JL8 disk brakeb option(I think there were only 200 or so in 69), the famous DZ 302, cross ram intake etc... It is the rarest of the rarest. I am in love. MMMMMMMM On top of all of that it even still has a fuckin 8 track. An 8 track.......ohhhhhh yeah ;)

My SS is a little rare itself. It is number 7 to come to Canada in 97. There were only a total of 152 out of abot 3000 Polo Green SS made in 97 total and about half were automatics. Also I think about 75% of the 152 total were cars with t-tops and prob half of the 152 were done in leather. I dont know how many of that were actually tan leather. I bet if you break down most cars they become rare but it is cool to see what you got 8)

I might have something to say about that. Only a handful of silver 02 Formula Firehawks like mine were produced, with my custom leather and killer stereo I'd say I have a 1 only car. :drama:

Okay but those Player's cars were kinda slow don't you think? Under 300hp. :p

Lots less the 300hp. But they were never made for speed. The cars were all equally matched simply to test a drivers ability to run the cars throught the track. Id be really interested to see how a Players car with 25year old suspension tuning technology stands up to the newer cars. Either way I love both. I just think its sweet to say its 1 of 97 or like 1 of 40 ((however many are still left with the badging, how many survived the street and how many survived the racing series))

dont kid yourself, those bad boys were fully bluprinted motors and balanced, they made alot more hp then a stock production car, especially with the exh uncapped. i remember them at the molson indy years back on the old track, they would still hit 110mph on the main straight, pretty impressive

Sorry ....they werent anything special. Talk to Karl Hunter who was heavily involved with these cars. They were hand production engines that were dynoed. The higher output and lower outputs were put into regular production. They took 97 engines that all produced the same hp in order to make the racing all about driver skill.
"The engines in the Players Challenge Series cars (R7U - or A4U before 89) were no more powerfull than any other 305 of the same production year.* The engines in Players cars were hand assembled and dyno tested to make sure they were all as close in power as possible so the series would be competitive.* There were no special parts or modifications to the engines.* A different PROM (chip) added a rev-limiter and eliminated the VATS (antitheft) system on 89 and later cars.

This guy was right in the middle of it. He either raced one or was on the crew if I remember correctly. FormerR7Uowner had one too just without the badges. Did anyone get a clip of when Mike left. That was awesome to see the car get loose!!

before 89? i was talking the most recent ones, i know for a fact they are balanced and bluprinted motors, you dont put a clearance and balance variant motor together and expect it to live and be reliable in a race series. even if all the components, cam and such were the exact same, balancing and bluprinting on a motor such as that will yield an easy 10-15hp gain. plus they ran with open exh. no muffler. i remember watching them race, they were doing 110mph on the straight at the old indy track. that is not bad, for what it was

My Camaro Z28 is the only one ever owned by me. That makes it one of a kind. Th 1967 Z-28 this post started with was built for a GM exec, and I think is a three owner car now? I think... And besides, the rare Camaros that everyone cares about I think ar epretty limited to the ZL1 COPOs (hell yeah), and any of the Yenko/Berger etc etc dealership specials.
But hey, they all pale in comaprison to the mighty Turbo Trans Am, right?

Im not arguing. Im well aware they are blueprinted and balanced. I just dont see how a 305 with 230hp plus 15hp plus open exhaust will make 300hp. I have no personal experience with them but make my judgement based on people who have raced them and work on them. I couldnt care less what the hp is but I just like the fact its a factory race car. As for "before 89" he refers to the RPO code being A4U and not R7U. We need to get a third gen...plus a second gen...dyno day going this summer. Im getting tired of all the 4th gen dyno days. They happen way too much.....

Id love to find a 1969 Camaro ZL1 aluminum 427, there was 69 built.
my 88 is semi rare its the only year thats the sport coupe had the look of a iroc-z with the body kit and grill. and the last year for the sport coupe in the 3rd gens, then i have the 305 TBI, 5 speed the block heater,no t tops, split rear seats, loaded interior, minus power seats and leather. and it was factory burgandy, ive never seen another one in my travels and research.
and of course my 91Z28 is 1 of 97 produced 8)

I always get a kick out of how much stock is put into "balancing and blueprinting"
The Players GM Series engines were made by hand - not assembled by machine. The balancing was done manually instead of by machine. This is the only thing that made them unique. This was not done to optimize performance or increase power or even to help with durability. These engines only made in the neighbourhood of 230 HP and RPM out at 5000. With that little amount of power and low RPMs a small block will live forever - even a regular production engine assembled by machines. I have been beating mine up for years - it has over 200,000 KM on the original Players engine - it is still a stock 305. Never been opened. Burns oil like all the rest, but I haven't been able to kill it yet. Still runs good, still makes about as much power as any other healthy 305 TPI of the era (89 Camaro 305 TPI). Maybe a little soggy on the bottom end due to degredation of ring and valve seal.
I had a 91 Trans-Am 305 5-speed that was NOT a Players car, and that car was definately quicker than my 89 Players Camaro. Impressive especially considering that it also probably outweighed tha Camaro by at least 250 Lbs. Regular production engine - unless it happened to be a Players engine that was outside the range for the ones that went to the series.
Players engines were built using all production parts to production specifications. The assembly and balancing being done by hand instead of by machine assured better consistency. For regular production engines you could have as much as 20 HP variance from a "good" engine to a "not so good" engnine. On average, most regular production engines were fairly close. What GM and the series wanted to do was to make sure everybody had the same amount of power - nothing more, nothing less. That way, no competitor had anything to complain about... "I need another engine - I am sure this car has a soft one..." so on and so forth.
The exhaust was done so the spectators in the stands could actually hear the cars - NOT for power. These cars with a stock exhaust were almost inaudible from the stands of a racetrack, so for the sake of fan appeal GM mandated the open side pipes. Personally I think they sound like crap, but when you get 20 or more of them running in a pack at the track at least it sounds like something is going on.
110 MPH on a long straight like at the Molson Indy is not impressive. The close bumper to bumper racing action that the Players series provided was impressive and exciting.
I really wish the Players engines did make more... That way I mite be able to give the little Hondas more of a run on the straights... that is untill the new engine is done.
