how bad is it to go to red line? what about past it? just curious
i know the valves float but other then belt driven accesories how bad is it?

giver until it won't go any higher
a small block is good for about 6 grand at least
but most stock motors won't have any pull past 4500-5000

Yup, revving it up to redline won't get you going any faster. But you likely won't do much damage, especially since SBC's aren't interference fit engines. Give'r till she blows, then build something better! ;D

i know your factory rating is 5500 but with some mods even my cammed stocker with stock bottom end made max power to 5900 and i reved it to 6500 at the track to get the best times ;D a stocker motor id say 6000 you dont need to go any higher, rest is just unnecessary wear. esp. with stock springs etc.

it better rev easy, when the motor is straining to rev, then you are doing some serious damage, and failure is soon to come. never valve float a motor. and besides the rods cant handle it, at least mine were prepped and i had ARP rod bolts :P

Red line, Power Limit and rpm Limit are all 3 different things. You're all confusing the three. An engine that makes peak power at 5500 rpms will probably rev to 8,000+ if you never let off the pedal. Sure it will wind to the moon but it won't be making any power and it will eventually let go. There is no magical RPM # that it will blowup though. Its pretty much dyno proven that all hyd cams are done after 6000 rpms because the lifters are too heavy. If your can makes peak power at 5500 rpm there is no point to rev it to 6500rpms. You want to make your red line a little past peak HP.

i watched a show and they said other then the belt driven accessories the lt1 motor can rev extremely high
and how'd you get 7k nin?lol

doesnt mean it needs to go that high or makes any power up there :P

yea by accident breiflt is ok, but dont make a habbit of it, full load pulls.
p.s. i ran my 3800 in my 95 that high too pretty much 6300-6500. :D

Upgraded my spring in my Caprice LT1 (in my 85 z) with the same springs recommended for the CC305, and I have the rev limit set to 6K and I bounce off it (when the car was running) through the first 3 gears, pulls like a bitch and want to go clean past it, but figured no point yet till I get it on the Dyno. Figured 6K was safe.
well i doubt i hit 7000 exactly...my car 'idles' at 1100rpm...the tach is a bit off...it reads at 850 on the snapon reader thing
so i was probably 6500ish
and that was by accident when i dumped it once...i usually shift at 5500 max

you have a rev limiter so its all good

just try for 10,000 :D
what's your planned RPM max?
I would eventually like 7K, I am 90% sure LT1's max out at 7500 due to PCM limitations, and thats with engine work not stock (also PCM tuning)

this cam, shift 7500, valve float begins at 8000, if i get my new cam ill be shifting at 7800 prolly, when i run nos ill lower it to about 7300. bottom end is good for about 1000hp but i dont want to take any chances yet :|

HELL NO, its just build for extremely high, low end torque because its going to be powering a 5000+ lb car

well i personally saw the dyno from the previous engine this guy built with the same components, i've added a couple goodies to ensure that i have the same results, if not a smidge higher... I will post the dyno results as soon as i get them for my motor (should be by the end of the month)

Yeah, 400 TQ and 500 HP is a lot more fun than the other way around.

its all a balance, torque is a factor that can be manipulated with mechanical advantage. if the hp isnt there, your not gonna be going fast no matter how you slice it. the more hp you want the farther the tq curve has to move up, cuz at 5252rpms thay have to cross. if it peaks way soon, then the mid/high hp will be down. an we all know you need rpm to make hp. its all a trade off. ill take hp then tq personally. cuz other wise we'd all be driving diesels that are strong off idle but arent fast at all :noes:

no cuz like i said, torque can be multiplied and manipulated. its all dependant on the mechanical advantage applied.
and nothing i ever do is rice.... :nono:
