i ahve a bet with a a buddy, that in the 3rd gen motors, for the pontiacs and the chevys are the same engine, i dont think there is such thing as a pontiac engine, or a chevy engine, jusy a gm motor that came in either pontiac or chev. if there is anything that differes between then, please let me know

no what were saying is, pontiac doesnt make a motor for those cars, let alone pretty much any car. through 3rd and 4th gen. they are all chevy or buick 3.8L in the later ones

yup, except in 89 only TA's got the Buick 3.8L Turbo. ala TTA

otherwise the same engine was in the same model, trim level wise.

ie Z28=TA and Camaro=firebird

one thing they do claim is the TPI motors, the TA lost 5hp/5ftlbs due to the intake design.

ok thex for that. by the vin number thing, i just meant that if i type the vin number into say.. carfax.com, its gunna come up as a pontiac. i know they havent made their own motors for quite some time now. And the deal with the t/a intake being more restrictive, that can easily be solved with a little port/polish correct?

if you type in the vin to carfax, it will tell you what motor it came with eg. 350 sbc or 305 sbc etc

The 301 was the last Pontiac motor. Production of that motor ceased in 1981. The last decent Pontiac motor was the 400, which ceased production in 1977 ('78s were leftovers). Everything after that was Chebby. A lot of Pontiacs from '77 on had Olds and Chebby motors, too.

So everything after 1981 = Not Pontiac!

EDIT: Ooops!!! The 400 stopped in '78, and '79's were the leftovers! Damn, I gotta start thinking before I post...
