View Full Version : Questions about buying a used LS1 Camaro/Firebird
So i'm looking around for a used LS1 Camaro / Firebird and i was hoping that you guys could point out things to look for in regards to potential issues with the engine, electronics, chassis etc.
I'm a noobie to GM and was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.

get one and figure out after it happens :)
you gotta be more specific
there's nothing really wrong with LS1 fbodys...only thing i can think of is possibly t-top leaks after years and years of driving in shitty weather
other than that...theyre quick and cheap for what you get in my opinion...not hard to get them into the 12s

wait a year and I'll sell you mine :D
but as far as issues when buying a used one...
1) have the engine scanned...but with that said the ls1 is actually pretty reliable..havent had any problems with mine...
2) if the owner has records of when the plugs/wires etc were last changed thats good, cause plugs are a big deal to change unfortunately
3) you can look for flex marks/creases in the rear bumper and quarter panels...if there are some it sorta says the car has either been driven pretty hard or raced a lot
4) check the t-tops out...mine have never leaked but i hear its common
5) take it for a good spin, go through all the gears and make sure it shifts without any problems....
Basically they are quite reliable, go fast and stick to the road nicely....if the car has been looked after you shouldnt have any problems
recommended mods after purchase (if they havent been done already): Shifter, Airlid, Exhaust

follow your gut...
if it seems too good to be true...it probably is...
when you find a car that you think is worth looking at...check it out everywhere...i tell ya, I've looked at some vehicles where there was a majorly damaged part that affected the mobility of the car...and when i asked the owner about it he said.."i dunno..never seen that before!"
trust your gut and spend a long time inspecting it... ;)

LS1 is a great engine man, but find out if the spark plugs have been changed recently like was already said. They are a bitch to change....also i find the transmissions a little shaky so definitely chek to see if all shifts are smooth transitions. other than that the car is really a blast to drive and can take quite a bit of punishment before anything at all goes wrong with it
if you are still looking for a ls1 *, i might be selling my 99 z28 m6 , mint car black t tops , loaded. I dont think im gonna sell it for a bit , but if u want to check it out thats fine , that way you have somthing to cmpare other ls1 's that u look at :)
