View Full Version : I need rear end advice

My rear end is in poor shape. (I don't know what gears it has).

- As far as I know, it's the stock posi disc rear, but the posi doesn't work.

- I'm running a beefier powerplant now, but it's nothing excessive.

- I have NO perspective on costs in this matter.

Should I take my car to Rear End Specialties and have them fix the current piece, or should I buy a different rear end and just install it myself? What kind of money should I be spending?

Any suggestions/info are appreciated, cheers.

Hey..............well, I have a g-body and just replaced the 7.5 rear in my Grand Prix, unfortunatly, I got a clutch and all the other good stuff done too. * With a posi, I believe you're lookin around the $1500 range, of course depending wat brand of gears, if you need axles and posi you choose. *For a plug, Berts automotive (New West or Vancouver only) have always treated me right with no bullsh*t! *Good luck man, and break out the cheque book :fingersx: *

I've been very impressed with my 9 bolt Aussie rear,
posi work very well
and I've heard they can handle big block power as long as your not running stickys

tell me your price range :D

It's hard to lay out a price range when I don't know enough about it.

I could say that I am willing to spend 3 grand on this, but out of 3 grand I would expect to get something that's WORTH that sizeable investment (not something I'm not going to use).

If spending 1500 on an alternate option is going to yield basically the same results for me with my setup, then obviously i'd prefer that.

buy used 9 bolt put gears in it. that would be the cheapest, plus if you stay street tires it should be fine.

I agree
if you can get a 3.45 9 bolt clean it up and rebuild it, new bearings etc,

its a slightly bigger ring gear than a 10 bolt and the bearing cap placement is alot closer than a 10 bolt leaving less room for flex

9 bolt doesn't use C-clips either

if you're willing to spend that much, i got a quate at $2300 for a whole new Eaton Carrier/Diff/Posi gear set. Thats a whole new diff from hub to hub @ Bob's Driveline in Aldergrove.

I'm gunna carry on the plug for Bob's Driveline and let you know, i've had a lot of work done with those guys and they're great to work with and their prices are really good

excuse my ignorance..

where are c-clips used and what is the better alternative?

what vehicles did the 9 bolts come on?

and should i just grab one from the buysell?

also, the rebuild - can i do it myself, and just grab some instructions from the net? I have tools and am not stupid.

okay i'm stupid but i have tools and can bang them together like a sonofabitch.

basically in 3rd gens they had your standard issue 7.5" rear. then they have that borg warner 9 bolt deal which came in some trans ams and irocs as options. its got a cone style posi instead of plate style. its a slightly bit different, 28 spline axles i believe too.

I'd steer away from rebuilding it yourself it can be done but
you have to get the right back lash or it will destroy its self

talk to Mike(irocnparts) about a 9 bolt he sometimes comes across them

9 bolts came in G92 cars-preformance axle option
3.27 w/350 auto
3.45 w/305 stick
and the rare 1 is 3.70 in 85/86 T/A with L69 motor

C-clips are what hold the axle in, in a 10 bolt

I'm not 100% sure but in a 9 bolt it uses press fit bearings similar to the setup of a 9" ford

also ring gear on a 9 bolt is slightly larger at 7.75 inches
