View Full Version : ENGINE SPUTTERING II ???EEERRR

Took the POS to 89Vert's house plugged in his scanner i was having a major spark issue(9 -19) turns out ma leads were burnt. Changed ma leads n my cap n rotor. Problem seemed to go away took it out for a burn seemed fine. I just got back from town a longer 30 min drive problem seems to have gotten worse.
Seems ok when engine is cold but when the engine warms up to operating temp the fuckin car shakes, u pop the hood n the engine is goin nutz, idle not fluctuating stays the same just running rougher than a mother fucker. Sound like the engine is all over place. Like it is searching for something. I dont hear a vacuum leak or anything but..... i a cliking sound on passenger side valve cover almost certain it is a colapsed lifter i doubt that is causing this cuz the lifter has been gone for a while....
If any of this sounds familiar to anyone please holler back. Let me know what u did or what u think. THX :mad: :mad: :mad:

did you pull your chip out?
it wasn't working properly when we had it at my house
it wasn't turning then fan on early enough
I think that is part of if not all of your problem

Well this guy Luke at Lordco(GOOD GUY not no 16 year old idioso) said the chip wont affect the the fan timing, but i guess for the the 15 min it couldn't hurt. Worth a shot i guess.

that is 1 of the main things an aftermarket chip does,
gets the fans to turn on sooner so timming can be increased without detonation

Really well ma lordco guy said the engine should stay cool enough with the lower T -Stat(160). But like i said it is pissing down rain at ma house n the chevelle is in the garage so i'll remove the chip tomo n see if that helps.
Also with my spark issue do u think it could have been a plug instead of a wire, there were 2 wires burnt n one was cracked, but i didnt change the plugs.
Should i consider changing them aswell???

check the plugs and clean them but they should be fine
Lordco guy don't know their ass from a hole in the wall
if you put a T-stat in it will open sooner but the car will still reach the temp setting of the fan when in trafic
the fan keeps the car cool t-stat stops it from running to cool
you have to lower the temp setting of the fan
you said with your chip you don't remove the factory chip
it plugs in with it
and your fans are turning on at factory setting, so I think your chip is screwing up
give it a shot, I've heard those style chips are shit anyways
I'm getting closer to having the stuff to burn chips, then we'll crank some real power out of it,
I've got all the factory setting on my comp now for TPI fbody and ybody(vette), when I get it first thing I'm goin to do is change my brothers car to a vettes settings and take her to the track
should turn some mid to high 13's :cool:

Sweet i wanna run 13's!!! :fingersx: I will give it a whirl tomo n let u know ur post ma findings. I 'll try the chip first n see n then if i feel like fukin around under th car again i will check the plugz but iam confident 12000km on a set of plugs like how bad could they be.

With the stock chip(which apparently is a JET chip too is from 1993) took the one out which i bought last year n seemed to have made my idle worse now it is hoping around n shit hunting for something not sure. Not stalling out ur anything i dunno wtf is up. ON the outside of my computer is say it a remanufactured GM product.HELP ME!!!!!!! :mad: :mad: :mad:

Just took it down the street 2 secs stalled twice n the only way to get the car to fire is by holdin the gas on n startin it that way starter wont turn car over on it's own.SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS ON ASWELL. WTF Time to trade her in i think for a FORD!!!!LOL JK :mad: :mad: :mad:

Just disconnected the battery to restart the computer thinking it would idle again but to no avail. Still wont fire unless i have my foot on the throttle.
Any suggestions would be appeciated!!!!! :doh:

I removed the 2 jet performance chips. RE installed the stock one same problems the engine idle n runns like ass still. Doesn't stall took it down the road. The fan still kicks on at 107 degrees. Same as when the performance chips were installed. NO FUCKIN CLUE!!!!!
Soooo.... need some ideas fellas...... holler at me lemme know what u guys think....?????????

Yes it's my 91 z-28. Treatin me like gharbage run the premium fuel give it all the good stuff n yet this chev doesnt seem too like me. :'(

MY car has 3 chips
The stock one that says "delco"
JET that the stocker chip plugs into but the jet plugs into computer not the delco but both r mated.
Jet which is smaller like 1/6 the size of the other Jet plugs into the Jet.
Ok hear goes my explaining: with all 3 chips installed i have a sputtering idle. Same as before Stevo
Then with the small jet chip removed car idles until i drove it down the road where it stalled 2 times. Engine runs rougher but not alot. ENGINE LIGHT comes on n wont start without my foot on the gas.
Then with just the stocker original DELCO chip car fires right up idle still sputtering as before but the ENGINE LIGHT is off.
I dunno where to start do u think it could be my timing gears and/or chain worn causing this ???? :mad: :mad: :mad:

if your timing chain jumped a tooth that could be part of the problem
You could throw 100 parts at it and not solve the problem
intranet diag isn't the way to go
need to log some consistant time on it knowing the exact symptoms and when it happens
you need an intake manifold gasket for sure
and if you do your timing chain at the same time you might as well do a cam,
but do you really want to put 10 plus hours of mechanical work into your 305?
I could check all the basics for you but time is money :)

OK so i plugged the delco chip n the original jet back to get the engine soon light to come on it did so i pluged a jumper wire into the diag port in A and B. I didnt get one flash not even th 1 , 1 2 meaning that code 12 which is nothing every other code after that one flashes is what u r supposed to look for. SO...... now i guess i start hunting for a 350 tpi.

the code 12 always shows up though. it doesnt erase that one. That code should always flash when the battery is connected. 12 mean like some b/s like power to ur distributor.
i have it in my book but that one should come on and then the trouble codes come after that.

if its running like shit when it gets warm try replacing the O2 sensor its a $30 item an Loco auto parts, may be part of the problem, also the CTS can make ur car run bad if its fuct.
i had a weird sputer to my engine this year, turned out to be a lack of dielectric grease on the Ignition Module, try that its a simple easy chep thing to do
also what kinda plugs are u running? check each plug ,ive bought brand new plugs and had several of them faulty.

Wouldnt an O2 sensor come up in the trouble codes cuz 89Vert scanned it n found nothing but.....i dunno???possible

i had a Bum O2 sensor few years back, it wouldnt throw a code, but it would create a bucking and jerking feeling at highway speed, turned out that the only way to tell it was the O2 acting up was to use a scanner and go for a drive then watch to see what created the problem. sure enough the O2 was not reaading properly, it was a New O2as well but thats a* aftermarket for ya, went to a Delco sensor and no problems since.

I dont know fuel injection systems that well, but if your air/fuel is makin ya fail aircare, it would be easier to adjust a carb to make it pass than FI

NO i passed everything wasnt even close to failing ma car is just idleing all fucked soiam thinking i have a vacuum leak somewhere. But i dunno need to make some moneyu n take to a shop so they can hook it up to a scope n see excactly what is occuring. But i havnt got a paycheque for about a month now so iam kinda treading water at the moment.
Soo i guess it'll have to wait. :noes:

fuel injection will always pass as long as everything is working
and all emsions stuff is in place
a/f is self adjusting

10 hours remapping fuel curves, or 10 min with a screwdriver and jets :angel:
and as for the motors performance, the FI part isnt what determines why it can go that fast. :)
