Ive never heard anything about the chip being burnt as in fried but what they are really rfering to is making a custom chip requires you to "BURN" all the values for timing, fuel etc. onto a chip. Im gonna get one made for the most performance and keep the stocker for aircare. I just really need to get some dyno time

The eprom in these cars can only "deteriorate" (erase/lose the program) if they are exposed to UV light. I have heard people having problems with an eprom if it had the "window" uncovered and was exposed directly to sunlight for a fairly long period of time (longer than just a couple of hours).

Frankly, the only time I've seen the eprom go bad, is when they were erased and reprogrammed too many times (meaning you have the eprom burning equipment to reprogram the eprom).

Fried ECMs are probably the most common problem I've seen with the whole computer system. They easily and cheaply purchased from any wrecking yard.

your ecm might fuck up, not likely the chip unless you've been touching it,
you can have a new chip burnt to recalibrate your ecm if thats what you mean
ecm are copadible from certian cars, its the chip that sets the calibration
