Thirdgen's use recirculating ball steering setups not a rack setup so there are more parts involved.
I would recommend changing the tie rods and idler arm as stated above and go from there. With more moving parts than a rack there can be a few possibilities.

okay...Im kinda new to the whole steering stuff so I need to know how to check. I went to GM and got diagrams etc. Heres what I do know...... Ive got new wheel bearings that I installed a month or 2 ago cause they were noisey. The car runs straight and no noises but once in a blue moon under hevy hard sudden stops youll hear a single clunk. So if anyone could suggest a procedure for checking the componets please let me know. I will post a scanned pic of the steering pieces when I get home from work... Thanks

Ok. So its the box. Its worn out I am in need of a box from 85-92 Camaro/Firebird with FE2 option code. I guess that means IROC/Z28 or Formula etc. Anyways the part # is 26087062. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You should check out the new light weight manual box and shaft from Flaming River.
