Hey guys was wondering what you're opinions were on 4th gen mods...I got some decent wheels, and my exhaust is going in soon (Magnaflow Cat-back), but obviously I want to do more...I plan on using the car for street (daily driver) and eventually the occasional auto-x...Maybe the strip once in a blue moon...
Here are some of the things I was thinking about:
a)CAI-Anybody have one on theirs? Brand preference/gains/price/source?
b)Short Shifter-same as above; worth the money?
c)Eibach pro-kit and/or 1LE swaybars- anybody used?
Any other suggestions? Tell me what you got and if you like it!

I'd get a high flow cat to go with your cat-back system..makes quite a difference.
I have a Moroso CAI which im quite happy with...K&N FIPK II is another good one, or the SLP CAI.
I'd say some headers would be a great mod to get too, though they are pricey. If your a single cat f-bod, make sure you get a bigger y-pipe with the headers.
Go to http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/. for available mods and general prices. If your looking for stuff cheap check out Ebay.

Hey thanks for the input...
I'm actually not running a cat with the catback, it's more of a "resonater-back" ;D
I will probably get headers in the distant future, I was actually planning on getting a CAI first, but I got a smokin deal on a magnaflow catback so I couldn't pass it up...
Did you install subframe connectors? I'd really like to do that when I build up the car fund again... I was also thinking about a strut tower brace...

Ya, i was gonna go with the no-cat setup, but aircare is a bitch, so I spent about 300 bucks on a really good high-flow cat which is almost as good as no cat...and since theres no resonator either it sounds really nice with my custom exhaust.
And definitely grab a CAI, you can find them cheap on ebay, that's what i did.
I haven't installed sub-frame connectors yet but am gonna purchase some in the near future if i can find some that will fit a convertible. There's gotta be someone on here who has so just ask around. I just bought some headers so gonna get those in first before i worry about the sub-frames....
Alrighty, keep on moddin'......

I just threw the cat on for aircare, but to tell you truth its a high flow cat also, and I didn't really notice a big difference in power or sound...It was a bit raspier I guess...Do you have a strut tower brace? I was thinking I'd do that cuz there's some good deals on those... Check out slponline.com, I'm sure they would have s/frame connectors for your vert...

Idunno about the 3.42's to 3.73's I bought my car w/ gears, but I think he mean a hypertech power programer...

ahh, ya probably, i dunno, i'd say headers is on the list before that...
so how do you like your gears?

Idunno...if I bought a bone stock car the first thing I would do would be a skipshift then a full exhaust...that's just me..I wouldn't be able to handle 1st - 4th at all

You don't even need to buy a shiftskip delete package to do it..can be done in 5 minutes yourself

that one that goes to the solenoid?? don't you have to do something else that makes it not throw a code or something?
Mr. TroPiCal

Im pretty sure all i had to do was unplug a wire...im gonna phone my buddy cause i can't remember what we did...i think the only advantage to the shift skip delete kits is it stops the "shift skip" light from coming on..but who cares about that....ill leave a post after I figure it out...

Ok, talked to my mechanic and here's the deal...on the 4th gens its easy to do, you just gotta unplug a wire underneath the transmission that goes to the solenoid...
but..on the 3rd gens you have to do that and disconnect another wire that he thinks is behind the front console, otherwise you'll throw a code a mess up the computer....unfortunately he can't remember exactly where the wire is but he thinks its pink (hasn't worked on a 3rd gen in a long time).....
so i guess the best thing to do is either buy a delete kit or try to find some info on the net.....or buy a 4th gen ;D

he mustn't have worked on a 3rd gen in a while cause they don't have skip shift, its only the 4th gens that have that option. But yeah, I have a 97 Camaro as well as my 87 so thats teh one I'll be doing it on.

how bout the 3rd gen trans am's...do they have shift skip?...otherwise ya, he must have been mixed up but it sounded like he'd done it before on a 3rd gen...anyways...you'll most likely have to get your car up on a hoist to get at the wire to bypass the shift skip

No skipshift in 3rd gens, started in 1994, 93 Fbodies are the only 6-speeds that don't have it. When unplugging wire, you need to use resisteor...
http://www.installuniversity.com/install_university/installu_pages/sophomore_year/cags_radio_shack.htm
That's a pretty good writeup on how to do it...I personally think I'll spend the $30 on the actual module, but if I cheap out that's how I'm gonna do it 8)

You don't even have to go through all that trouble w/ the resistor etc....thats just so you dont get an error msg when your car is hooked up to a diagnostic computer i think...all you have to do is unplug the wire...save your cash

Best mod for fourth gen, supercharger with intercooler, haven't run into anything that can beat me, yet
Which wire do you unplug to get rid of the skip shift? Theres two wires into the tranny the other one is for reverse lock out, stops u from putting in reverse when your going into 5th
Does the check engine light turn on?

man .. u guys really beat a topic to death
just unplug it .. or get a custom tune put in ur PCM
it wont throw the SES light .. just set a code that noone cares about.. dont bother with a resistor..
even witht he "kit" the skip shift light will come on .. the ONLY way to shut that light up is to program the PCM or pull the bulb behind the dash
as far as mods go .. the hypertech is the biggest piece of trash put on the market..
a catback wont get u any real hp .. if ur after HP, get headers, and a cam and valvetrain upgrade ... dont bother with crap like a throttle body, airfoil, shit like that ... get a CAI (or make ur own like i did), headers, cam and ur looking at 330 rwhp with a custom tune... again, HPPs are garbage dont even bother ...
gears are fun, get 3.73s with stock cam .. or if u get a cam get 4.10s
best bang for buck is nitrous .. stock LT1s can handle a 150 shot easy
anyway .. talk to me if u wanna mod ur 4th gen .. i've done it all and know what works and what doesnt

Ya. I agree with everything said there....except I did notice a difference with my catback...excellerates a lot smoother and faster now....
Sideways...I was wondering how much power you think Im putting out with Ceramic coated BBK heads and y-pipe, CAI, and hooker catback with hi-flo cat, and which mod specifically you'd recommend next (cam?)...i got a 95/ta
Also wondering how much power the shitty stock rearend can safely handle...and whether sub-frames, torque arm and the like is worth it for street use?
i hooked up a snapon scan tool to my car and it had two options for skip shift and they were both "on/off" options...im gonna turn both off during the week and test it to see what it does and ill get back to you guys on it
hopefully it just doesn't turn off the light and still does the 1 -> 4 thing haha...
stay tuned

with just headers and exhaust and cai and stuff u should be looking at 290 rwhp.. ur next hp mod should definately be a cam .. get a LT4 hotcam or a comp cam CC305, both will pass aircare, u'll have around 330 rwhp and rev to 6500 with either one ...
as far as suspension goes, subframes help a bit, if u really wanna make it handle, get a set of shocks / springs ... or sway bars . get a 32 or 35 mm front bar and it'll make a huge huge huge difference... strut tower braces help as well
as far as traction goes, get LCAs and better tires ... leave ur torque arm alone.
ur rear end will be fine untill u put slicks on it and dump ur clutch... u'll start hurting ur rear end at around 400 rwhp on street tires .. any hp on slicks will break it

I noticed a bit of improvement with the CAI, nothing much with the catback, and a big difference when I did headers, 1.6RR and !cat at the same time. I have swapped in a rear end with 3.42s since all of that, and I can't comment on the difference in 1st gear because I don't have traction there anymore. 2nd does seem to pull better though. Next thing I am doing is putting in my 2800 Vigilante stall, shift kit and tranny cooler, and getting stickier tires. Next purchace I make (after tires) will be a cam, then ported heads (or both at the same time when I can afford it). As for suspension, I did notice a difference with LCAs... the rear end seemed planted under the car better. I have a set of boxed subframe connectors waiting to go in as well. Those are supposed to make a decent difference in the stiffness of the chassis.
