check ignition wiring, best place to start, but sounds to me like ignition either way.
my cousins car does this...sort of similar...
he's got an 81 Camaro Z28...350ci
i had it for about a week and whenever i'd turn it off...it'd run (sorta) for about 4-5 seconds after then backfire and turn off (felt REALLY raunchy)
so i guess he needs a new motor? but then again this didn't always happen...also he needs new oil and temperature gauge plugs(switches)...maybe that has something to do with it

:o Sounds serious! I'd say check the fuel pressure and what not. I think that if the car gets a clogged filter or regulator I would imagine that the car would lean out and backfire. Something to try. I don't think that it would throw a code if it did it like that.
How many times has it done this?

yep definately check the fuel pressure
pump/filter could be the problem
could be anything

the problem you are describing is called run on or dieseling. that usually happens if the timing is out of wack, the spark plugs are the wrong heat range causing hot spots in the combustion chamber and preignition after the car is turned off. improperly tuned carb, poor gas is a good place to look, and high idle speeds when you shut off the motor. thats the one that got me before. also carbon buildups in the chamber can heat up and make hot spots and cause it to be hot enough in the chamber when you turn it off its still like theres a hot spark in there cuz a piece of carbon is glowing and becaust the motor is still turning a brief moment even after you turn it off and no ignition power the cycle is enough to put gas in and ignight it and move the engine to another position where it can inject fuel again. quite amazing actually.
if its auto try shutting it off in gear then put it in park, then it will never happen again, untill he looks at the problem closer :)

does when driving
it shuts off fine, it is imposible to have run on with fuel injection
its got fuel, checked pressure already
not the maf, does it when maf is disconected
its almost like a bad miss
thinking distributor inductive pickup or ignition control module
